VIDEO: Famous game circuits recreated in ModNation Racers

As soon as ModNation Racers was announced at E3 last year, I knew I'd be making this feature. The thought of being able to recreate famous racing games in a kart racer sounded great - almost too good to be true. But it wasn't - it's real, it's here and it works better than any of us could possibly have imagined.

So join us as we take you through three of the best racing games ever made, ModNation style.

Daytona USA

The 777 Speedway course on Daytona is one of the most iconic racing game circuits ever made. The huge open bowl, the cones around the pit lane that bounce down the track as you hit them... and that famous Sonic Wall at the end of the pit straight. Sadly, there's no simple way to draw on rock faces in MNR just yet, but that aside, this is pretty close for a first attempt. Here's the original in all its (emulated) Model 2 glory:

And here's our ModNation re-creation:

Adding boost pads around the outside of turn one not only makes it feel faster, but means the fork in the road for the pit lane is no longer the quickest route. Add in some weapon pads in the pit lane and you've got a reason for taking the short cut. Oh, and there wasn't a rotating dial scenery element, so we put in a satellite dish in its place. Hope you don't mind.

Above: It took longer to write 'Hornet' on the front than make the car

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is a beautiful game and you can play it on PSN/XBLA in the form of OutRun Online Arcade. The first track is the classic sunshine beachside town - something that fits the Beach theme nicely in ModNation. Throw in a few speed-up pads to simulate the thrilling rush of the downhill section and you've got yourself a fun little track. Here's the original:

And here's our ModNation re-creation:

Liked that one? Wait until you see the one over the page...

@ Bluscorp. I would love that track to be recreated. Find it rather brilliant to drive round it and see if i could beat their lap times. :D. The only trouble is you'd either easily beat their time or you'll be ages away. It'd take a great creator to get it just right. :P.

This is freaking awesome! Kind of got me interested in the game...just a little.

@db1331 I think loads of Kart Racers have surpassed Mario Kart many times. ModNation Racers has at least surpassed Mario Kart Wii in my book. Even though Mario Kart Wii has 1 point higher Metascore, things like a good online part and at least pretty good graphics are taken for granted on PlayStation and Xbox, but not on Wii. Imagine what score Mario Kart Wii would have on PS3 if the graphics were the same. So goes if Mario Kart 64 were released today, but that's unfair. MK64 wasn't released today, but many years ago and therefore we can forgive the outdated graphics, the boring driving mechanics etc. and still have it in it's throne because of nostalgia and other great forgiving factors.

Something I thought of in relation to user generated games. Inspired levels a sign of no creativity or a sign of respect. Yeah it's sad that most levels, or in this case tracks, that will be created will be taken down due to copyright.

@EnragedTortoise1 Because they are both exclusive to nintendo or sony and some people are biased.I've played mario kart 64 with friends who had a n64 when i just had the ps1. but now i have a ps3 and i want to make some bad ass tracks and race them online so Modnation Racers is gonna be a first day purchase for me.
  • bluscorp - May 22, 2010 7:40 p.m.

Let's face it, the one track that will be recreated the most is the Top Gear track. And a Stig Mod, lol. Some Diddy Kong Racing tracks would be good too.

Huh, surprised you guys didn't make the one level that I was expecting to be made in this game: RIIIIIDDDGGGGGEEEEE RAAACCCCCEEEERRRRRRR!
  • RareHero - May 22, 2010 5:38 p.m.

Great feature. And I'd imagine it must have taken a lot of time to recreate those tracks because they're done really well. Three Seven Speedway looks awesome, as simple as it may be.
  • EnragedTortoise1 - May 22, 2010 2:29 p.m.

I love Mario Kart. I love ModNation Racers. Why can't we all just like both?
  • jtmcbath - May 22, 2010 12:45 p.m.

I think it's funny that I own each one these games in their original formats, loved the inclusion of Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast. It's one the most racing underrated games.

Those tracks looked pretty good and this game is great but I will wait until it comes down in price before I buy it
  • jakery22 - May 22, 2010 9:18 a.m.

This game looks rather brilliant. Not really a racing fan, but i've played the demo and i love it. :D. Does look easier to create stuff than in LBP too.
  • Mr.Epic64 - May 22, 2010 6:11 a.m.

@Mexiflan. Yeah your right, RAINBOW ROAD, RAINBOW ROAD!
  • Mexiflan - May 22, 2010 3:45 a.m.

Mario kart is great,i haven't played this game but it looks great. Can we stop the hatin' now? Needs more Rainbow Road.
  • sleepy92ismypsn - May 22, 2010 2:50 a.m.

i'll probably go to gamestop tomorrow to pre-order and they give you kratos. Did Amazon take away the $10 game credit for pre-ordering it from them? I can't wait to make my own tracks in the full game, it seems easier than making LBP levels. Can you play the UFG(MNR developer) created tracks online as soon as you start the game?
  • Wizrai - May 22, 2010 1:54 a.m.

You guys shouldn't even bother with db1331, he hasn't even tried it and he's just speaking without any bases, so just ignore it and keep enjoying the game please...
  • austinite04 - May 21, 2010 9:41 p.m.

This game PWN's Mario Kart... I did like Mario Kart 64 back when I was a kid, then it just got BORING.. Same with Mario Kart Wii... I laughed at how DUMB the motion steering is. Mod Nation kicks Nintendo where it hurts... Just watch how many people defect from Wii's to get a beefier Ps3. Custom Tracks and characters?? What's better than that??? Does the wii have customizable tracks on Mario Kart wii?? NOPE.. They also haven't released DLC, which is a freaking Shame. Nintendo released a Half Baked Mario Kart on the wii.. Mod Nation is just better.. I was in the closed Beta last year, it was SO COOL.. I made 10 tracks, and 100 Mods (racers) Has anyone been able to do that with Mario's games?? Again NOPE. Anyone that still thinks the kart racers of old are still playable, are obviously poor geeks that didn't save up any $$$$
  • DarthKratos - May 21, 2010 6:39 p.m.

Sorry to double post, but I just wanna say that the copyright police might not be able to affect this game at all since it's all user-created. Just look at the copyright-infringing LittleBigPlanet community. If there's a popular movie/game on any console, you can bet that it has a LBP clone. Dark Knight? Check. Halo? Check. Star Wars? Check. Mario? Double check.
  • DarthKratos - May 21, 2010 6:34 p.m.

    @db1331 If you have a PS3 you should play the demo (or even the not-as-good psp demo if you have one of those). It is definately not just an average kart racer. It plays better than a lot of racers and the creativity it allows is a lot of fun. I've spent all of my gaming time since Tuesday on creating cool characters and perfecting difficult tracks that I can't wait to share online when the full game comes out.;
