Uncharted's Nolan North “will burn someone's house down” if the movie is bad

Voice actor Nolan North, who’s most famous for his role as Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series, joked that he will “burn someone’s house down” if the upcoming film adaptation directed by David O. Russell is bad. Is this really the best person for Uncharted voice lead Nolan North to be threatening?

O. Russell, who has his own history of violence, repeatedly headbutted George Clooney on the set of Three Kings, provoking a fistfight between the two. The top YouTube hit for the director is the notorious torrent of blue language he unleashed upon Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees. For God's sake, his latest movie was called The Fighter.

Still, it seems like North and Russell are on the same side… for now.  North hasn't been shy about angling for screen time as Drake, who will be played by repeat O. Russell collaborator Mark Wahlberg, but ultimately just wants the movie to be as good as he feels it could be. In an interview to be published in Edge Magazine's latest issue, North said, “Is it difficult, is it strange? Yeah. But that's the business of making big movies - you need big stars. I'm very protective of what we do.”

O. Russell, who's said by Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells to be “working really closely” with the company, presumably wants the film to be great as well; but if it comes to a physical brawl between the dangerous director and the prolific voice-actor, honestly, we'd go a buck each way. Then again, North never actually said he'd burn O. Russell's house down, or Wahlberg's – or anyone responsible for the movie for that matter. He's just pre-emptively, arson-confessingly, hopping mad. If Uncharted's 2013 premiere winds up taking place anywhere near your house, best have the fire department on speed-dial.

Why is there still even conversation about whether or not this movie will suck? Name one good video game movie. Now name one good Mark Wahlberg movie (Difficulty: No The Departed, he had a small role and still sucked). Now imagine combining the two. This movie will not be made for fans of the games. It will be made for the average movie-goer, who just wants to watch explosions and shallow dialogue while stuffing popcorn in their face. The only semblance this movie will have to the games is the one or two parts where they THINK they cleverly inserted something subtle that only a fan of the games will get (the FPS part in the Doom movie) but in reality it will scream HEY ISN'T THIS JUST LIKE THAT GAME YOU LIKED, COOL HUH?!?!? and make everyone feel dumber for having watched it.

No offense to Nolan, I think he's a good voice actor and all but the movie will undoubtedly suck judging by the track record of game-to-movie adaptions. @db1331 I agree it is shallow that they only throw us a bone in the form of maybe one scene that resembles the game in some way, and then the rest of it is just trash. Something that has always baffled me is why do they deviate from the story of the game so much? That's the story the gamers fell in love with in the first place, and the script is already written. It's like they go the extra mile to piss everyone off for no reason.

Time to call Dre and Eminem. Remember that time they stood next to a burnt down house? With a can full of gas and a hand full of matches? They still weren't found out.

Nolan North's scientists are working round the clock on combustible lemons.
  • bamtan - May 10, 2011 6:24 p.m.

WITH THE LEMONS! I WILL GET MY ENGINEERS TO INVENT A COMBUSTIBLE LEMON THAT'LL BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN!
  • bamtan - May 10, 2011 6:25 p.m.

dammit @oneshitfinch, beat me to it by this much...

    With combustible lemons?

Combustible Lemons = apparent new Portal meme Still, I'm slightly, cautiously, optimistic that something good will still turn up out of this. The director is fairly talented, and while I'm not a fan of Mark Wahlberg I'm not a hater either. I'm mainly not convinced he'll pull of the charm that defines Nathan Drake as well as obviously Nolan North can or Nathan Fillion would be able to. Then of course there's the fact that the director speaks of the games like he's obviously never played them before and is generally clueless of their storylines (hey, remember all those parts from the games with Nate's family? No? Anyone?) and the angle for big-list stars, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in context here, and with the issue of Wahlberg being able to do a Nate Drake personality... Yeah, might want to get those matches (combustible lemons?) ready, Nolan. Just in case.

Yeah, I was beaten to the punch on the lemons joke too… Anyway, I really hope that this movie is good. I think it'll likely suck, because no one in Hollywood has a clue how to make a decent video game adaptation, but Uncharted could really easily make the transition if someone handled it with enough care and respect. So far, though, care and respect would not be the words I'd use to describe this project.

It's been said before, but I really think they should have cast Nolan North as Drake in the film. He's done the voice and the mo-cap for years already.

@db1331 I am certainly NOT a mark wahlberg lover, but I would have said The Departed had someone posed that question to me. That is an excellent movie, and he is in it. Period. He wins in that case simply because he was in it, also I think he did the role he had in the movie justice. Was it a knock out super great acting job? Maybe not, but it still did the job. I pretty much agree with everything else you said though, so at least it's not like you had a completely invalid point.

Will he burn it down with combustible lemons?
  • CoryM1134 - May 10, 2011 7:09 p.m.

Add me to the list of people who associate flaming houses with Cave Johnson immediately. "Get mad! I don't want these bad game adaptations, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see David O'Russell's manager! Make David O'Russell rue the day it decided to give NOLAN NORTH bad game adaptations! Do you know what I am? I'm the one who's gonna burn your house down!" Completely seriously, though, it is a director with proven talent working closely with the game's developer, which is leaps and bounds more than games usually get. At the very worst, it won't be very good, everyone will forget about it quickly, and we can all get back to the real Nathan Drake, as voiced by Nolan North and created by Naughty Dog. Also, this film isn't really made for us anyway. The only people I've ever known to truly enjoy the Resident Evil/Tomb Raider/Prince of Persia films do not play the games, or games in general. To them, Resident Evil is about a hot girl doing lots of aerobatic action scenes. Also to them, Uncharted will be about Mark Wahlberg protecting antiquities or whatever with his dad and uncle. They'll care that it's based on a game about as much as I care that Science of the Lambs is based on a book.

we need a really good game to movie, the best so far are the FIRST Mortal Kombat film and Resident evil (Still not brilliant i enjoy the resident evil films). Personally the worst has to be Max Payne i love all the games played them to death and back, but it just flopped SOOOO hard.
  • Cruddi - May 10, 2011 7:33 p.m.

P.S I do play games i have now played all the original resident evil games (Code:V included) and i still like the resident evil films even the CGI movie from 2 years ago. Sorry for double post i don't like doing :$

@zenprime That comment was hotter than a set of twin babies.
