Too mean for Epic Mickey?

Above: Mickey's had a mean streak in the past, but it was all in good GUN

I was already pretty surprised with what Disney was letting Warren Spector get away with in Epic Mickey. Not only did give him free reign with their sacred stable of characters, they actually let Junction Point get away with redesigning the Mouse himself, a truly prestigious rarity in and of itself. So, I’m not entirely surprised the “Mean Mickey” form is being removed from the game, which I believe you can see below. Although, to hear Spector tell it to The Mainichi Daily News, the omission actually wasn’t due to pressure from the Disney suits:

""People don't like it when you mess with Mickey," said Spector. "We did a focus test that was really eye-opening for me. There was a biker dude saying, 'Oh, I'd never play a Mickey Mouse game,' and then we showed him images of a changed Mickey. I was sitting there thinking, 'You're gonna love what we do,' but he said, 'No! Don't mess with my childhood.'""

I didn’t see even see it during my play session, but to be honest I was more interested in how the surrounding Disney castaways would react to your mischievous deeds than any kind of "Fable Effect" on Mickey himself. I mean, it doesn’t look like the less than heroic “Scrapper” character style is going anywhere, and I almost want to side with the biker guy in saying I find the idea of an “evil” Mickey a little too unnerving to look forward to.

Above: If this is what we’re to believe the excised “evil” Mickey would’ve looked like, the only discernable difference is an arched brow line and darker underoos

Either way, it's a little ironic to cut something like this out of a game based entirely around cast aside cartoon characters is cutting something unlikeable? Oh well, here’s hoping the code is mistakenly left in and someone exposes it for the least controversial “Hot Coffee” incident EVER!

I agree with Clovin and hardcore gamer. Needs more Psychonauts.

It would be awesome if Mickey went insane in this game, an all the levels and enemies were simply figmints of his grief wrecked imagination. Also he would frequently meet a sexed up version of his dead wife Minnie Mouse and he would be relentlessly pursued by Donal Duck with a giant sword and a Pyramid on his head. Somebody make it happen!

An evil Mickey sounds kind of disturbing to me, but I'm still going to pick this one up. Looked great at E3.

Hey Chris, do you think I should get a Wii for this game?
  • RebornKusabi - June 30, 2010 1:57 a.m.

Yeah, I read about this earlier today on The Escapist (home of Zero Punctuation) and the thought that IMMEDIATELY came to mind was "I wonder how Chris is going to react to this news?" Well... here it is! I will say though that compared to the "RUINED FOREVER!!!" over-reaction that the article's comments section had, I'm pretty much with Chris here. While an evil, bloodthirsty Mickey that murders and maims everything he comes across is a little unnerving, even compared to his earlier days, I can completely understand it being cut from the game. I love Warren Spector (I'm replaying through his game "Deus Ex" right now and having a complete blast despite it being an almost 10 year old game!), so if he honestly feels that the focus test results are showing bad results of what he was doing then I have complete faith that if he cuts something, he knows what's best for the overall product.

sorry to post again but this really bothers me ! Has anyone seen Mickey in Arabia?? Not that this game should be racist by any means but the point is that mickey started out as a douche! We should embrace his douchebag roots sans rascism. :D

goddamned it ...sadly alot of my interest has just gone down the tubes. Guess I'll wait for the score before I figure out if I'm buying it.

  • KingArchie55 - June 30, 2010 1:13 a.m.

I'm going to get this game no matter what. "Mean" Mickey or not. Mickey is Mickey... Well, not really in this situation. But the bottom picture, I have no problems with. Also, when I read biker dude, I though Kanji from Persona 4! LOL
  • AnthonyGalindo - June 30, 2010 1:04 a.m.

I'm not against a "mean" version of Mickey, I'm just not really buying the whole Mickey used to be a mischievous rascal angle. Chris are there any other clips we should watch where Mickey act's in any way like this "Scrapper" version of himself? A single cartoon doesn't really show me that he has this history that Junction Point likes to talk about.

You can mess with Mickey, just not modern disney corporate executives
  • Cyberninja - June 30, 2010 12:09 a.m.

  • Cleanser247 - June 30, 2010 midnight

I can't wait to play this! It's a shame they couldn't ass the "evil" lokking Mickey in the game : D
  • hardcore_gamer1990 - June 29, 2010 11:46 p.m.

Micky will only ever be a proper playable character when he goes insane and the levels are the internal workings of his broken mind, where he is a complete badass.... Why yes, I have recently played "Alice", why do you ask? ReCaptcha: shadings found - do all ReCpatchas now refer to game related content such as concept art? *awesome fail face*
  • JohnDagger - June 29, 2010 11:44 p.m.

I don't see why getting a larger brow from evil actions is so controversial for Disney. Maybe if he grew horns, smoke followed him everywhere and children wept at his sight. Who knows, all I know is that this game is gunna be awesome!
  • V13Dragongal - June 29, 2010 11:43 p.m.

Evil mickey mouse should be in that game, but just for a time. Not the whole thing. Or what they could do is just make him a completly optional character to meet/battle.
  • GamesRadarChrisAntista - June 29, 2010 11:42 p.m.

@remight That's from the largely speechless (save for Pete's stereotypical Italian accent) "Symphony Hour," made in 1942. I linked to the uncensored short in the picture caption!
