Summer In February review

Set on the eve of WW1, this based-on-real-life Brit romance kicks off with young aspiring artist Florence Carter Wood (Emily Browning) arriving from London at the Cornish seaside village of Lamorna.

Before long we’re in love-triangle territory, Florence finding herself drawn to two best friends: volatile painter Alfred Munnings (Dominic Cooper) and cavalry officer Captain Evans ( Downton Abbey ’s Dan Stevens).

Though it struggles to transcend its Sunday-TV feel, Christopher Menaul’s film boasts sturdy turns from its three leads, while the outdoor lensing is a breath of fresh air.
