Infamous Second Son - Sucker Punch announces first PS4 game

A game announced without warning

How's that for a PS4 games prediction? As part of Sony's Meeting 2013 today in which it officially announced the PlayStation 4, the company also announced Sucker Punch's Infamous Second Son.

The protagonist shown during the demo appeared to throw fireball-like projectiles. He's part of a resistance network, designed to fight back against the government.

Sucker Punch is perhaps best known for its open-world action adventure franchise Infamous, the most recent installment of which arrived for the PS3 in 2011. However, the studio has been around for quite some time, having first made its name in 2002 with the advent of Sly Cooper. The most recent installment in that franchise, Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, was handled by Sanzaru Games and dropped earlier this month to a strong critical response.

I didnt know what the heck i was looking at till they showed it was infamous, being "Second son" was an even bigger throw off. Awesome, seriously though at first i didnt know what i was looking at, that kid only made all the various Donte meme's spawn in my head but im sure as hell it wont be anything like that kind.

Out of all the surprise announcements, this was perhaps my favorite one. I love the way they used to introduce it, I love the change of setting, I love that so far, it seems to be staying true to at least ONE of the endings of Infamous 2, and most of all, I love thinking that this time, the range of powers and ways we'll have to interact with the world will be expanded to far more than just the basic elements. Really looking forward to know more.

Here's the thing, though - which ending would be considered canon? In the good ending, all conduits are gone. In the bad, non-conduits are gone. It was pretty clear both exist in Second Son, so I wonder how that will be addressed.

Well, I'm thinking it could either take place after the good ending, in which maybe in a far, far in the future, (The society shown in the trailer seems to be far more changed and futuristic that what was shown in the first two games.) a stray remnant conduit gene is finally re-awakened in certain individuals. Or perhaps it's the other way around? Maybe it takes place in the bad ending, in which eventually the fact that everyone had superpowers got so out of control that some kind of genetic repression had to take place, and a super authority took control, which would explain the excess of security everywhere. ...Or maybe it's a mix of both? who knows XD they could pull a move ala Elder scrolls, and declare that somehow all the possible endings in daggerfall took place simultaneously, lol. It could be shrodinger's Cole! :O

hoped we would have learned the fate of cole.

The fate of Cole was made pretty damn clear in both endings of Infamous 2, really.

consider this as another sale for the PS4

Make it more like the first game please, I thought 2 was a step back.
  • BladedFalcon - February 20, 2013 5:33 p.m.

Got to disagree, 2 was a big step forward in both the graphics department, the gameplay, the versatility of the powers, a much better and fleshed out cast. (Specially Zeke, who went form being the worst thing in the first one, to being the best character in the second one.) Only two aspects I can think of in which the first one was better would be the villians, and the overall story and the handling of the final shock twist. The core game though, is definitely much more improved in 2.

Yes to graphics, gameplay, power versatility, and cast development. I just didn't care for New Marais at all, I much preferred the city of the first game to be honest. Setting can make or break a game for me, I like to have a fun playground and Marais wasn't it personally. But yes, I definitely agree that the things you mentioned in your first statement were visibly improved. I just want a more urban setting like the first game's, with some more powers that aren't devoted to just elemental damage. Instead of just tossing lightning, I'd like to see them do things like being able to manipulate the electrical flow within the body. You could use that to loosely explain controlling enemies or heightening your natural reflexes/physical abilities, or something like that. Just my two cents.

To each their own of course, I found the city in the first Infamous a tad on the generic side- I mean, it looked very New York-ish, and we've had like dozens of Sandbox games taht take place on literally a New York style of city, and it was very gray and dull, so I honestly did like the more vibrant new marais, with whole sections being either swallowed by the flood, or being swamps. If this trailer is any indication though, it definitely looks like a more Urban setting again, so there's that. Also, I'd like to point out that the character's powers didn't look electric-based at all this time. So we might be seeing an entirely different kind of element or move-set, which is totally a-ok with me.
