Sega bids on Atlus parent company

Sega Sammy is bidding on the financially troubled parent company of Atlus. Bloomberg Japan (via VentureBeat) reports that the house of Sonic is pursuing Index Corp., which among other operations owns Persona and Shin Megami Tensei developer/publisher Atlus.

Index Corp. was opened for bids after entering civil rehabilitation, the Japanese equivalent of bankruptcy protection. The bids reportedly came to around $200 million by the end of the auction last week, and Index will choose a buyer by the end of August.

Atlus also publishes external games, like VanillaWare's Dragon's Crown, and Index Corp.'s other operations include an animation and film studio.

Sega's reduced its internal operations over the last year to focus on its core franchises. On the other hand, it acquired Company of Heroes 2 developer Relic Entertainment in THQ's bankruptcy auction.

Looks like Sega doesn't mind hitting the thrift stores and estate sales to pick up development talent. We'll know more about Index Corp. and Atlus' fate by the end of the month.

I want either Sony, Squeenix or Ouya (yes, Ouya) to get it.

OUYA? Serisously? They mishandled so much on their console and you want them to have Atlus?

If this happens, Sega might end up being one of the big dogs again. At the very least, I would be happy that relic would be in a better position due to Sega's better position.

I really hope sega isn't the purchaser, nor do I want Sony, nintendo or crapcom buying them. It's fairly obvious why I don't want crapcom buying them, If Sony buys this awesome streak of atlus games on 3ds suddenly ends and if nintendo buys then it would likely severely delay persona 5 (which I'm assuming based on the history of the franchise is a sony exclusive) as they inevitably port it to a nintendo device. I think the two publishers who might be the best purchasers would be either square-enix who I feel are a good choice just by looking at eidos, or Namco-bandai because I feel that they'd support some of atlus' risky, niche games.

I really wanna play a persona where all the characters are humanoid animals..... that have relationships with humans....... or maybe a hospital game where you play as a doctor during the day and a werewolf at night.... think of the potential here people!

On one hand, nobody would have to worry about Sony and Nintendo keeping the integrity of Atlus considering the split fan service On the other hand, its Sega
