Universal Pictures is on the brink of appointing a director to its forthcoming Scarface remake, with No director Pablo Larraín in line to step behind the camera.
The Wrap reports that Larraín is in advanced talks with the studio over the project, which would represent the Chilean’s most high-profile gig to date.
The studio had previously revealed plans to update the classic crime saga with a new modern-day setting and a different ethnic background for its main character, who was Cuban in the original.
The Wrap ’s report now claims that the updated version of Tony Montana will be of Mexican descent, although no further plot details have been confirmed as yet.
The report also goes on to suggest that the studio is keen on casting a complete unknown in the leading role, and is looking for a bilingual and bicultural candidate to fit the bill.
No release date has been announced as yet, but expect that to change as soon as Larraín is officially confirmed.
