RUMOR: Wii 2 controller and console demonstration leaked

Nintendo is will officially unveil its next console on June 6th at E3 2011 – and GamesRadar will be there in full force to bring you all the details from the press conference. In the meantime, speculation on hardware specs, features and design for the Wii 2 (codenamed ‘Project Café’) continues. A recent video, allegedly captured at a Nintendo presentation for developers, provides viewers with a glimpse of the console and a detailed diagram of the much talked about controller, which is expected to sport a built-in HD touch screen and a camera.

Above: Is this what the Wii 2’s controller will look like?

If the video is legitimate, the gameplay footage running on the controller’s screen confirms that the built-in screen will be capable of much more than just providing players with an extra screen for menu inputs. Other leaks and rumors suggest that the controller will also feature a front-facing camera that can also capture screenshots.

Expect more details when Nintendo officially unveils its next console, and expect to find them here, on GamesRadar.

if it aint broke, don't fix it... there's no need to reinvent the wheel you know?! all these consoles are trying to get the upper hand by making more and more complicated hardware... honestly, I like the fact the games are at a higher level now and don't get me wrong, motion control and all the other new additions are awesome... for me, just don't make it a standard... stick to the basics and make these new additions optional... focus on making better and great games!

    I bet that's a touch screen...
  • Terrorrizor - May 23, 2011 1:06 a.m.

I bet Nintendo will use this design just to piss people off.

I am appalled that this is still sitting on the front page of GamesRadar. Seriously people, this is just a dumb fake video. All of the signs are there. It's 40 seconds long, it's got no sound for no reason at all (but they did have time for a red circle). It's got this super weird transition with fingers in front of the lens at 0:26, I mean recording devices have buttons don't they? They're obviously in a school lecture hall and considering the apparent age of the people present, these are college kids and not employees at Nintendo (also look at the white lecture computer in the lower right corner). There would also be no need for a random presentation showing the concept like this. I'm pretty sure that whatever Nintendo is working on, they have already had their concept meeting a long time ago. Also, the slides are more bare than a powerpoint made by an ancient professor. And look at the title of this video. The quotation marks make it seem like the makers of this video want you to know they're in on the joke too. Besides I think Nintendo is pretty good with keeping it's trade secrets and this is not how it would be revealed. Come on Tyler Nagata, get this mess off of my favorite game news website. It's making me queasy.

It's...intriguing, I think. I'm not gonna make any judgements yet ^_^
  • Terrorrizor - May 22, 2011 10:32 a.m.

@Scammeleon: You're right it does look like a router, or maybe it's some kind of External hardrive plugged into a computer outside of the camera shot. Who knows, we'll find out at E3 like everyone keeps saying.

How is this bad? I think if the controller has a screen but its akin to a normal controller things will be fine. I swear if most gamers were political they would be Republicans. "Give me the same damn thing, just make sure it looks better! The less change the better." Gamers are a very Conservative bunch. Stop b*tchin and wait for what Ninty really does.
  • Nintygameplayerperson - May 22, 2011 3:59 a.m.

I guess the screen can be handy for stuff like HUDs, like the damage meters for characters in Smash Bros., or your life and magic power in Zelda. It may as well be the equivalent of a giant DS, on steroids, not that that's a bad thing.
  • LordZarlon - May 22, 2011 3:56 a.m.

Controllers with a screen are fine if it doesn't cost a lot more. It would be totally against everything Nintendo has done over the past 30 years to release controllers that cost hundreds of dollars. We need to be patient and see what Nintendo plans. They have always said that the Game Boy line of handhelds is not dead and that the DS line is separate. Maybe this is the ultimate culmination of Nintendo's idea that started with using a Game Boy Advance to control Gamecube games. The flaw with that was that the Game Boy Advance was uncomfortable to use. This looks ergonomic and maybe what it's what they wanted to do all along.

Why the fuck are you morons complaining, it looks NORMAL, it just has a screen. I wouldnt mind if it was real, you guys complain all the fuckin time
  • shawksta - May 22, 2011 2:30 a.m.

It looks awesome! Its a Normal controller with a Screen on it, not bad if its the real deal!
  • InfinityPrimo - May 22, 2011 2:28 a.m.

@jayQ - Nintendo's last system?! Is that a joke? do you not know about the bags of money they have laying around the office at Nintendo HQ. Hey just cause you dont like the BIG N doesn't mean they aren't successful. They have enough money in they'rte slush fund to make at least three more systems plus another handheld.
  • R-ape - May 22, 2011 1:02 a.m.

Methinks I'll just wait for E3 before I believe anything here. Although the screen on the controller would be fancy. Hope it's rechargeable, because if it isn't, I'm shunning N 'til they release wired controllers.
  • Scammeleon - May 21, 2011 11:59 p.m.

@Bantha_Fodder: "modding a Wii, getting a room, making up slides, setting up a projector... it all looks like a fair amout of work" I dunno, if they're at a university getting hold of a projector's no problem, wouldn't take too long to knock up a handful of slides of mocked wii2 art and the console that's actually there looks a lot like a router to me.
  • Scammeleon - May 21, 2011 11:53 p.m.

To me this does look completely fake, shouldn't there be at least some copyright gubbins on the slides? Anyway I really can't see how a screen on the controller is going to benefit games. I'd imagine the controller screen would display inventory/maps/camera angles etc, which is alright on the DS as the screens are right next to each other. But imagine playing CoD where you have to look down at your hands to view the map or flick between weapons instead of looking at a different part of the screen. The addition of touchscreen controls would prove fairly useful in a number of respects but the shape of that supposed controller really doesn't lend itself to the same touch controls the DS has. Just a few rambly thoughts anyway.
  • codystovall - May 21, 2011 11:31 p.m.

yay no more controller retardant games. seriously some(of the few) good games got screwed by the wii
  • Bantha_Fodder - May 21, 2011 7:48 p.m.

also, idkif this is fake... I mean, modding a Wii, getting a room, making up slides, setting up a projector... it all looks like a fair amout of work, just for a hoax that would offer no gain for the perpetrator... yes I've been playing LA Noire :D
  • Bantha_Fodder - May 21, 2011 7:46 p.m.

actually, a screen on the controller could work really really well. people are speculating that the Aliens game might be a launch title. imagine playing Aliens, no HUD, with a motion tracker slowly beeping on your controller. it could be put to some good use and it's not nearly as intrusive as waggle. can't wait for E3; go on Nintendo, you've got the floor. no one else is revealing a ne console, this is your ONLY chance to completely blow us away with no competition. don't screw it up.
  • LOZ4EVAH - May 21, 2011 7:02 p.m.

Stop whining everybody! Nintendo looks like it's finally doing a by-the-numbers console. People whined about the Wiimote and now that they might offer a "normal" controller you're gonna whine about that too? I just can't wait to play Zelda and Mario in HD (especially Zelda) no matter what controller I wil be using.
  • Limbo - May 21, 2011 6:41 p.m.

Please be fake. I want a normal controller and console with no gimmick. If it's really going to be the hardcore Nintendo console it should be, there should be no gimmick.
