Pokemon X and Y announced for 3DS: first details

No remake - it's a new game

Nintendo has announced Pokemon X and Pokemon Y for Nintendo 3DS. Speaking in a special, Pokemon-themed Nintendo Direct, Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata explained that the game will launch simultaneously in Japan, Europe, Australia and the US in October 2013. Here's the first trailer:

The most obvious evolution over Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 on DS is the new art style. All the previous core entries in the series used sprite-based pixel art for its characters, but here everything is presented in polygonal 3D.

There were even some scenes shown that suggested action-platform sections in the style of Pitfall, although the game's core is still capturing and battling with Pokemon. New Pokemon will be featured and the three new starters were shown off, namely Chespin...

Fennekin...

...and Froakie:

We'll bring you more official Pokémon X & Y info as soon as it's made available, but in the meantime have a look at our breakdown of the Pokémon X & Y trailer in which we spot things normal people would not spot.

Nintendo actually announced the names of those two legendary Pokemon in the trailer. The blue one is Xerneas (pronounced ZURR-nee-us) and the red one is Yveltal (pronounced ee-VELL-tall).

Dang it! I made a bet with my little brother that the next Pokemon games would be SUN and MOON with STAR being the 3rd entry. X and Y is still pretty good though. That toad starter is ingenious.

I always wondered where Pokemon names would go if they ran out of colors...

It's no Ruby and Sapphire remake but still, HOLY FUCKING SHIT BALLS! It's pretty obvious that the Yellow/Crystal/Emerald/Platinum/2 of the generation is going to be called "Z", Am I right?
  • BladedFalcon - January 8, 2013 3:05 p.m.

like deozens of people have already called out the "Z" below you. I hope you didn't try to be clever. Also, why would you want a Ruby and Sapphire remake? That was easily the lamest generation so far.

People want a remake only because Johto and Kanto did, but they only had remakes because the Majority of pokemon on said gens the remakes were made were gone and had a chance to gain more, you can catch the majority of Gen 3 pokemon on the Safari Zone of HG SS alone. Gameplay wise, Gen 3 played a big role in introducing not only double battles, but the mechanics that would make the competitive side of Pokemon FAR MORE DEEP. I personally think Gen 3 is lame aswell save for its memorable People and Pokemon, but it did have atleast a part in improving the mechanics.

Ironically, gen 3 was my favorite out of all with gen 5 next to it. Primarily due to the Pokemon in that gen. But that's just me. My least favorite was either gen 1 or 2. I grew up with gen 3 with my first poke game being firered

With all honesty much like Gold/Silver/Crystal was your pokemon game, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald was my gens pokemon games, I was too young to remember how good Gold and Silver were and had no concept of what was happening when I played them. but with the Gen 3 games I finished all three of them all the way through and cherish them forever

Well, you just explained it. You just like gen III better because it's the first you experienced, and you're fully admitting that colors your opinion XD

Thing is, Gold/Silver/Crystal aren't even the games I actually grew up with, nor the ones I played and fully understood first. That would be Blue/Red/Yellow. But even though it was the first gen that hooked me up, I like gen II better because... well, because I personally think it IS objectively better. And look, I understand that people like you and the poster above are fond of Gen III, because it's the first one you grew up with, and you feel the more emotionally attached to. But honestly, it's the generation that has innovated the least, and for my money, it's the one with the laziest, uncreative Pokemon designs overall. Want proof? One word: Luvdisc.
  • BladedFalcon - January 8, 2013 9:19 p.m.

Thing is... Double Battles have honestly been pretty pointless, at least where the main campaign of the games is concerned. I suppose that in the competitive scene they might be a bit more important, but let's be real, they are hardly a grand, excellent or deep innovation. I DO admit that Gen III introduced deeper inner concepts such as nature and EV points, but one could argue that made the game unnecessarily more complicated. Besides, for every concept they brought in like that, they also added needless ones such as the beauty pageants, and the whole berries and items surrounding that drab >_> Same with the pokemon, I won't deny there are a couple memorable ones, such as Milotic and Absol, but I'd argue there are far more of the lamest, repetitive designs of any generation. I mean- Luvdisc? Plusle, Minun? Aggron? Beautifly? Those last four are straight up shameless rip-offs of pre-existing gen I pokemons! And save for Aggron, they are even the same type! it's a kind of redundancy that this gen is guilty of starting.

I grew up with r/b/y, and my fav gen is r/s/e, and I really like the pokemon and the story in those; not to much, like gen 5, but also not to little, like gen 1, not too mention the awesome soundtrack ^^
  • shawksta - January 9, 2013 1:44 p.m.

Your definitely right in terms of main campaign, only in the Battle frontier in Emerald did it matter when they had them as a run in terms of single player. (I could be wrong and thought it was the same as Platinum and Heart Gold Soul Silver.) Your right on the point, kudos again for being detailed in any stand you take. It's a knack for each gen to have their own Pikachu, in a different concept and battle wise save for Gen 2 as it was it's Prevo Pichu but otherwise technically it did start the trend. Plusle and Minun were made to introduce the double battles and shows how affective it can be when there were possible strategies during them including moves like Helping hand, as well as abilities that power them up when Together(abilities were by far the best idea) Gen 4 brought a squirrel Pikachu and Gen 5 brought a flying squirrel Pikachu. Depsite how much of an awesome monster Aggron is, he IS just a rock/steel Nidoking/Rhydon As for contests and the additions for them like berries and such (for the contests that is) I agree but I guess they wanted to add something new considering they can't really do anything to the franchise that will otherwise turn it into a spin off. It was unique atleast how moves had their own contest sides, and it continued until now where Black and White 2 has a much more interesting Pokestar studio, which I may say is a 1000x better than the originals Musical, that was horrible and I hate it, and being able to download musicals was even stupider.
  • BladedFalcon - January 9, 2013 6:02 p.m.

yeah, B/W's musicals were pretty lame and silly as well, but at the very least that was easier to ignore, and it didn't jam your pack with useless berries. And well, yes, every gen seem to want to have their own take on a new pikachu, but at the very elast gen II ACNOWLEDGED it was a pikachu, jsut pre-evolution and smaller. Plusle and Minun are shameless ripoffs, and whatever the purpose they were created for, they are still pretty damn lame pokemon. And again, creating pokemons specifically for double battles is even stupider considering those are so scarce/useless in general, unless you actively seek to play like that in multiplayer.
  • shawksta - January 9, 2013 9:39 p.m.

Yes, speaking of which, i wonder what Pikachu Rip off we'll get this time, Pachirisu basically has Super Fang, and Emolga, while having the type shared with few, was only significant in annoying the f*ck out of you during elesa's battle in BW by having 2 of them. The Studio was very interesting, my favorites being Giant Office Lady and the Future Ledian. Wonder what we'll get this time. Its very off putting at first, but you would be surprise how active the online Community for Pokemon is, of course, Gamefreak tries to please both fans, otherwise its fun just getting your favorite pokemon and wrecking havoc.
  • BladedFalcon - January 10, 2013 6:48 a.m.

You forget that i am not a multiplayer person :p
  • shawksta - January 10, 2013 5:06 p.m.

I know, which is why i said that Gamefreak tries to please both fans, Black and White 2's competition with past gens leaders made continueing worth it unlike the original. Im saying that for your consideration, even though your a massive single player person, just letting you know its fun, even without the EV and Nature shenanigans. Otherwise i hope that they add even more awesome things for the Single Player to do.
  • SUCKxITxEZ - January 10, 2013 6:53 p.m.

they need to remake it simply for the physical/special split. and groudon and koygre in 3D would be pretty cool.
  • BladedFalcon - January 10, 2013 7:24 p.m.

Pretty sure you'll get to see both of them in 3D in this new game :P So that's really not a valid excuse...
  • SUCKxITxEZ - January 12, 2013 5:05 p.m.

why u hating on ruby/sapphire? its been like 10 years, let us have it. u got ur second gen and that was way more to ask for.
