Ping from the Radar - Letter from the Editor

Hi readers!

2013 was a hell of a year for us at GamesRadar! New console launches, tons of awesome games, TWO 24-hour livestreams for charity, four new shows… the list goes on. The team here at GR has been working tirelessly to get great content in front of your eyeballs as often as possible. We couldn't have done it without you, dear reader, so thanks for being a part of our community!

A lot has changed though, from last year. My puppy is no longer a puppy, we have several new faces on staff, including an expanded UK team. Oh, and you may have noticed that the site looks different! Are you reading this on a tablet? A smartphone, perhaps? If not, you can! Yes, we're now compatible with your portable devices and you can easily browse through all of our content by tapping and swiping.

Now, back to the new stuff. We've been producing several new shows on our YouTube channel to bring you fantastic content about the biggest upcoming games. We'll still be doing livestreams as well--we have one every Tuesday night, and another on Wednesday from 3-5pm PT, where our Community Manager Greg Henninger hosts a show to hang out with you guys. Greg also runs an Ask GR show, where you can submit questions to the staff and select which ones to answer. Are you wondering which staff member can run the fastest? Do you want to see who can eat the most burritos? These burning questions can be answered… all you need to do is ask!

I know a popular question has been about the comments section and when that is going to be updated with the ability to edit, among other things. The team behind the scenes is working on it, and we hope to roll out a new system in the near future. We do listen! It’s coming!

As always, we're available to answer any questions you might have, so find us here on the site, on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and let us know what you think!

for the past week i have not been able to read any article on this website. all the articles are blank, on firefox, i have already emailed about this issue and after so long it is extremely frustrating to have not gotten this fixed or even a reply back. This is happening to other people as well. It should not have taken this long without fixing the issue, the issue should have been fixed less than 12 hours after people started reporting it

Really glad to see a mobile version of the site. I'm also digging the new look for the site as well. The homepage is a lot cleaner than before and easier to navigate.

Really pleased to see Gamesradar working on my mobile, there are times in my job when there is absolutely nothing to do, so this will be going to the top of my "time-filler" list ;D

Excellent new site design, I really dig it. I cannot fucking wait for the ability to edit comments since I always find I have a terrible habit of thinking of more stuff to say after already clicking the post button. When that arrives I will be stoked.

I also noted that Sophia has the title of "Global Editor-in-Chief". Please give Henry a raise!

This comment is aimed at Sophia. Could you please do a new episode of SoundRadar? I really enjoyed your personal touch to that show and how you mixed interviews, with the music creators, in with the music itself. I know you're too busy to do the show often but a new one now and then would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the feedback! It has been busy, but at least I know one person cares lol. I'll do my best to revive it :)

Maybe one every few months. I'll take any scraps you can spare. Ha, ha!

Positives: Reviews layout nicer now. Article post dates are on the front page. Negatives: Recent comments aren't listed on front page. The articles are in two small columns now rather than three normal sized, so I have a ton of empty wasted space on the sides of the front page (probably made that way so it works on tall mobile screens, but looks bad on my wide laptop screen). This sticky bar at the top takes up a lot of my vertical space which means more scrolling, but is really annoying because most articles are gallery articles so it's already a lot of scrolling up and down to see the image and read the entire entry below each.

Not sure if you can do this sometime in the future, but being able to personalize when signed is always nice! Being able to pick how wide you want the main page to be, font size, etc. What article is popular right now is handy for getting new people to the site to get into it, but I personally scroll through all available articles so being able to have my main page set up with the most recent content as the main focus would be awesome. Also just an idea, but with this you could also have an option to select which systems you own/are interested in and have it display the recent games for your platforms on the front page.

I love you guys. This is the first site where I felt like making an account, commenting and being apart of the discussion. Keep it up yo. Here's to another great year. (Also I'm diggin' the new design!)

    dawww, thanks!!

So now it works really well on mobile, but now it's a bit wonky on my desktop. I only realized that there were arrows at the edge of the top articles because they showed up on the mobile. On my desktop they show up only as missing images artifacts (I'm using Firefox). Also is the symbol that looks to represent "reply" with a number next to it is a comment counter? because they all show up with 0. Apart from that I kinda like it and it seems to be faster too! I always got frustrated at the last one because the squares didn't line up and It was difficult to check where I was last on the stream. At least this time the problems to fix don't make it harder for me to use the site, like the slideshow used to! I feel like that paragraph sounds harsh but I want to make clear that (this time) I actually like the change, it's just that there are some quirks to fix. :)

Thanks for the feedback! Still working out a few things... good note about Firefox images missing though.
  • Sinosaur - January 28, 2014 11:51 a.m.

I'm a little bit disappointed that there's barely any orange left. The orange gives the website an iconic feel. You should make something explaining the changes, because I can't see anything that's been added, just noticed a few things that are missing.
  • THETHINGABOUT - January 28, 2014 11:29 a.m.

So... the thing about... the redesign, is that, it looks pretty neat.
  • db1331 - January 28, 2014 11:05 a.m.

I haven't checked out the mobile version yet, I need to do that. I will say, the layout for reviews is one of the most beautiful damn things I've ever seen on the internet.
  • wadesmit - January 28, 2014 11 a.m.

I have to say, I'm also really liking the redesign! The mobile version is also especially apprecciated. Thank you. All in all, very sleek, very nice! And I second Cyberninja's suggestion to do a feature about the history of Gamesradar's design changes. That would be a wonderful nostalgia-trip :) Looking forward to the future of GR.
  • TokenGamesRadarFurry - January 28, 2014 10:45 a.m.

Much cleaner and easier to get to new features! I'm likin' it!
  • BladedFalcon - January 28, 2014 10:42 a.m.

@supergiraffe: Give it a couple hours. You'll see quite a few people bitching about the change sooner than later :P Just like they did a year ago when the format was changed. At first there were a dozen of positive comments, but soon after a deluge of bitching and complaining followed. 'tis the way of things, I'm afraid.
