LittleBigPlanet's Offensive Lyrics

Everyone expecting the adorable world-building LittleBigPlanet to hit shelves this week was rightly disappointed when Sony announced a worldwide recall just a few days ago. Apparently, the PS3’s biggest exclusive this fall contains a background music track with phrases taken directly from the Qur’an. And because the Qur’an is the central religious text for Islam, Sony and developer Media Molecule feared Muslims would take it the wrong way and get all pissy.

Above: Awwwww, how can we stay mad at these adorable guys?

Not us! We refused to send our review copy back for demolition and instead ripped video of the offending lyrics no matter what the cost. Here we present to you unaltered video of music from Grammy-award winning artist Toumani Diabate… who is in fact a devout Muslim. Think it’s a big deal? Or was Sony correct in anticipating a media shitstorm? Comment below!

LittleBigPlanet’s new release date is October 27th.

I'm Muslim and I am not offended by this, and if my parents heard it they'd probably recognize it and go hey thats from the Qur'an and would probably be happy that a Muslim song was in a game i played

Just download the song and listen to it while you play.

If I were Muslim I would find the removal highly offensive for the simple reason that they are likely doing it out of fear of the Muslim people.

Rizzler, look I am not trying to get into it with you man, I am just saying this, and if you can PLEASE answer my question: Why do the feelings of your "1 million Muslims in this country" count for more to a privately owned company than the other 300+ Million people in this country? Why can't the 1 million muslims just NOT BUY the game if they are offended? I know that's two questions but I'd still love the answers. The reality is is that this is a country built on the fact that everyone has rights, and they are all supposed to be equal to one another....I would argue that it's why many of the million muslims came here in the first place. So again, why do their feelings count for more than mine or the other 300 million people who don't care if there are lyrics from any religious text in a song? The other thing that bothers me here, and smileykyley was touching on it too is that: Even IF there was something offensive to us in the game, we would simply be expected to not buy it or deal with it. Because that is how this country always has, and always should work...the market tells us what is acceptable and what is not, NOT some people's religion. And if a company puts something out that most people find offensive, the people will voice their feelings by NOT purchasing said product and forcing the company to re-look at the situatuion so they can still make money, or even perhaps failing that company out of existence.

Ha! funny. But Why is it that they have to be so angry at us now so seriously? Anger just makes them look like douches. If people aren't doing this to be an ass then, who cares? Jesus gets drawn and made fun of all the time and we just say, "Oh... Whatever." And if it's funny, we laugh. why cant they. And i watched him preorder that at EB last week!

They should have been able to release this with no problem. But if they had shipped it as is, Fox News would probably have gone bat-shit crazy about it. Remember Mass Effect's controversial sexing it up? (Also, really funny video).
  • NelosAngelos - October 23, 2008 12:17 a.m. recall of GTA 4, but Little Big Planet, the last place I'd ever look for offensive material, gets pulled off the shelves. Whoa...what brave new world we live in.
