The Last of Us Gamescom trailer mixes violence and poetry

Hank Williams!?

Naughty Dog released the latest trailer for The Last of Us at Gamescom this week, and it features our two protagonists fighting for survival after narrowly evading an ambush by them. Similar to the old Gears of War 2 trailers set to Gary Jules' song Mad World,  this trailer eschews sound effects and screams for a low-key emotional ballad.

We love the subtle nod at the end of the trailer that Joel may actually have a much deeper and more conflicted past than we'd have suspected. From the sound of it he was no boyscout, as he suggests he was one of the people doing the ambushing not so long ago.

The song played during the trailer is called "Alone and Forsaken" and is performed by 1940s country legend Hank Williams Sr, in case you were wondering.

Kinda shines a different light on all the violence than the E3 showing did. This has that grey area, morally ambiguous, squirmy uncomfortable feel about all the bloodshed, kind of like Spec Ops: The Line. Overall seems like an emotionally challenging game to play. And for that, I like. I too may need to make a friend of a PS3 owner.

I loved that trailer, even if a lot of it WAS old stuff. I know it's cliche, but trailers like that really get to me in a way normal ones don't. I remember the Gears 3 one that had a similar kind of style, that really got me going.

I think I'm going to have to borrow a PS3 from a friend soon =3.
