The Last of Us - Video from Comic Con reveals new character

Meet Bill. He's nice once you get to know him

The official second day of San Diego Comic Con is a hot one, but if you can find your way into the heavily-populated panels happening all day long, you should be able to cool off some. Sony had another big one that followed yesterday's Beyond: Two Souls panel, this time focusing on 2013's The Last of Us. Sony still seemed to be stingy with new details, though they did reveal a whole new character in a never before seen cutscene. Meet Bill...

If that isn't the start to a mission, we don't know what one looks like. Bill is played by W. Earl Brown, a character actor from films like Scream and Vanilla Sky, but we know him best from Deadwood as Dan, Al Swearengen's top enforcer. He's a great addition to Naughty Dog's team and we're dying to see how it all comes together when the game hits PS3s sometime next year.

Those graphics look bloody amazing, but my issue is what it always has been with realistic graphics- the fact that they're just not quite there. Elie's facial expressions don't always seem to match up with her speech and tone of voice, and at first I thought the girl was a bad actress, but it's not. Oh well, it's a small price to pay for such gorgeous visuals. This is definitely high on my to-buy list.

Bill is going to betray you for sure.

I don't trust dear old Bill there..... It looks like the Last of Us team is taking the "cinematic style" the Uncharted team started to a whole new level.

Going to have to pick up a PS3 again for this game. I didnt care for Uncharted, but this...this looks amazing at every level.

That looked really cool and I can’t wait to see more. My question is, what was at the door in the beginning of the clip and what do they look like? Fast Zombies? Infected people? Mutants? Murlocks? I can’t wait to find out and fight one.

'The concept for The Last of Us arose after watching a segment of the BBC nature documentary Planet Earth, which documented a cordyceps fungus-infected ant, where the fungus takes over its brain and producing growths from its head; the idea that the fungus could infect humans became the initial idea for the game.'

    It was the Gestapo.

Also, am I the only one that's starting to see rather worrying similar parallel between The Last of Us and Enslaved? And I am not talking about the obvious, like the post-apocaliptic but verdant setting. But narrative and character's wise. SPOILERS FOR ENSLAVED TO FOLLOW I mean... So it's a post-apocaliptic setting when you control a gruff and world weary male that's tasked with protecting a vulnerable woman trough a journey, at one point, they go to search for a known associate that is an overweight, crafty inventor/mechanic in order to get a an otherwise rare or non-existent form of transport... Sounds familiar? I'm not saying tLoU is straight up ripping off enslaved, or even that they will end up being the same in plot. (They ARE very different, tone-wise. And personality wise, the characters aren't that similar once you analyze them in depth.) But I do find it kinda strange that you would rely in several similar tropes in a kind of story that has such a similar setting to begin with. Also, if Bill ends up sacrificing his life in order to save Joel and/or Ellie in any way, I'm totally calling Naughty Dog out :P Still, this is all just nitpicking on my part, similar tropes or not, tLoU is shaping to be pretty fantastic, and I can't wait to see more!

It's a lot like enslaved, but that's not a bad thing. LoU looks to be a more realistic spin on Enslaved's story. Plus there was a lot that the developer of Enslaved (I forget who exactly) didn't do quite right. It'll be nice to see a clean, polished game from Naughty Dog. Maybe I'm biased because I'm from Pittsburgh, maybe I'm just an asshole. But I'm looking forward to playing LoU the whole way through, which is something I never cared anough to do with Enslaved.

Ninja Theory is the developer you're looking for. And well, I really did like enslaved, sure, it's not a perfect game, but the narrative was pretty good overall. And again, I'm not saying they are the same plot-wise, and I'm also looking forward to LoU a damn lot, I'm just not sure how to feel about the fact that they do seem to share similar plotpoints. (Hell! Both Pigsy AND Bill are paranoid enough that they boobytrapped their lairs. There's just too many parallels for me to just chalk it up to mere coincidence XD)

'Former lead designer on Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Mark Richard Davies, has been working at Naughty Dog on the game." Even so, I think this will feel drastically different to Enslaved. Even the the relationship is much more interesting. The relationship in Enslaved at it's core was a sensual one, or at least that's how it was underscored. 'The Last of Us is not a "zombie game", but "a love story about a father-daughter-like relationship". This is pretty fresh ground for a video game (at least to this level) and it's a bold one. I applaud naughty dog for taking it. Still saying that, I most certainly do see the parallels you're mentioning. I just feel that they're surface.

Woah! Holy crap was that awesome! Also, anyone who thought that Ellie would be a boring, optimistic girl that would get in your way has definitely got another thing coming XD Really loving how feisty she is, not usually something you tend to see often. And really glad to see we'll be meeting other non-hostile (well, not too hostile...) characters along the way! Although my gut tells me that Bill is going to end up being dead meat... hopefully I'll be wrong.

Honestly don't want to sound like a graphics whore, but holy @#$% -- first thing I noticed was just how I seriously couldn't stop staring at the screen simply because of how amazing it looked, thanks primarily to the excellent, excellent use of lighting. Other than that, though, the voice-acting is very well-done, as per ND tradition, and the writing is smart and pitiless. Apparently, I could already tell that this game will feature an entire treasure chest of curse words, but, well, it's not like we haven't seen great games of the past pull it off before, 'ey, so here's to hopin' TLoU will make that list as well. On the long run, this cutscene looks and sounds great -- however, let's be honest; what we're really looking for is some gameplay..!! C'mon, Naughty Dog! Maybe a single third of this mission could be shown on Gamescom, by any chance..? ;P

There is a gameplay video. Not in this specific point of the game, but it's gameplay nonetheless. And it's freakin' gruesome.
  • Redeater - July 13, 2012 6:51 p.m.

Dan?? SOLD! Dan was one of the best things about Deadwood. I went from despising him to completely loving him! If they add Ian Mcshane as a foul mouthed but good hearted vagabond I will lose my shit.

Mystery science theatre 3000 was fricken awesome.
