Kate Hudson dreams of Mansions

As the Cannes announcements kick off, we have to ask one big question: why is it that romantic films only ever seem to come in two flavours: epic with a side order of sweeping, or your basic rom-com?

Bruce Beresford, who last directed Pierce Brosnan drama Evelyn, is choosing the first type and working on a big romance set against the Chinese Revolution in 1949. A Dream Of Red Mansions will star Kate Hudson as a gutsy Yank photojournalist who falls in love with an idealistic revolutionary (Ken Watanabe). Hope she doesn’t reject him when she realises he’s the fake head of an international vigilante organisation. Wait… No, that was Batman Begins. She should be okay.

Donald Martin has already scribbled the script and Beresford is ready to start production in Taiwan in October.
