Believe it or not, a sequel to
does indeed appear to be happening, with Eddie Murphy set to join original stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito as a long-lost third sibling.
Screenwriter Josh Gad caught up with
recently for an update, and explains how the sequel will keep elements of the original film, while also updating it for a new audience.
"We’re very reverential to the original, but have our tongue firmly in our cheek," says Gad. "As it needs to be, it’s very modernized. It’s taking them into the new world and it’s acknowledging that comedy’s changed a lot in 20 years.”
“If you saw
and it was released as a movie currently, you’d be like, ‘This is really strange,’" continues Gad, "so we honour that and we respect it, but we also play on it."
No word as yet regarding when production will start in earnest on this one, possibly because everyone is still reeling at the fact it's actually happening. Expect a
sequel to follow in due course…
