If rumors of THQ's sale are true, which publishers should pick up the pieces?

We pick the best homes for THQ's top titles

Words: , on January 15, 2012

Earlier today, rumors began circulating about THQ canceling its 2014 titles in preparation for a sale. THQ has denied the reports (you can read about it in the original post), but with weak sales on some of its AAA titles and several studio closures over the past few years it certainly doesn't sound impossible. We'd hate to see another publisher fall (and THQ has brought us some of our favorite games in recent memory), but we're prepared for the worst - even if "the worst" might not be that bad, as we've seen with Civilization being sold to Take-Two and Mortal Kombat being sold to Warner Bros.

Regardless, we've prepared a list of which publishers we'd like to see pick up THQ's biggest titles and franchises, if it does ever end up selling them off to the highest bidder.

Red Faction

Who we want to buy it: Ubisoft

Why? We can't help but think that THQ took a step in the wrong direction with Red Faction, turning it from an open-world playground to an underground shoot-em-up, which is why we'd love to see the game handed over to Ubisoft. Put the franchise in the hands of the Far Cry 2 team and let them take full advantage of the massive martian landscape and the destructible environments and we're 100% sure the next Red Faction will make Armageddon's problems a distant memory.

World Wrestling Entertainment

Who we want to buy it: Activision

Why? Many companies are known for licensed games, but nobody annulizes them better than Activision. For years WWE was one of THQ’s biggest franchises, and while many publishers could take it, it’s such an American franchise we could easily see Activision picking it up. Plus the reliable nature of its audience to pick it up each year is just the kind of safe, exploitable bet Activision likes. We envision Treyarch or Neversoft teaming up with Yuke’s to keep the series going, thus allowing Acti to stick its toe in the sports world, one of few markets they currently don’t dominate.

Darksiders

Who we want to buy it: Capcom

Why? Capcom can be very hit-or-miss, but when it hits it knocks it out of the park. We're imagining a Darksiders game made with some help from the Devil May Cry developers. Throwing some of Dante's moves into a Legend of Zelda-style game might help the series become the breakout hit it deserves to be. Plus, if Ninja Theory's DMC is successful, we wouldn't be shocked to see Capcom looking to branch out more into Japanese-influenced Western games, and Darksiders certainly fits the bill for that.

Devil's Third

Who we want to buy it: Zenimax

Why? We’ve yet to see anything from Devil’s Third since E3 2010, but if it’s still on track for 2013, given the game director’s desire to work with Western companies, our bet is Tomonobu (Ninja Gaiden/Dead or Alive) Itagaki and Valhalla siding with Zenimax/Bethesda. Zeni is currently working with RE4’s Shinji Mikami on an unannounced title, so it makes sense that the publisher would want to further expand its influence with Japanese gamers. And Itagaki’s style of action game was one Bethesda tried to get right before with games like Wet, so its possibly still a genre they’re interested in.

Zuffa wants nothing to do with EA. If they get their hands on THQ, you can forget the next sequel of UFC Undisputed, at least under the EA banner.

Square Enix does have an Open World franchise, Just Cause. The first one was terrible, but the second one is pretty fun. Though, they would have to bring on the Saints Row team as well.

I'd want to see de Blob go to Double Fine. Them, or Nintendo. I could see Nintendo EAD taking that game to the next level.

The only one I really care about is Darksiders 2, But that in the hands of Capcom would be pretty amazing, provided they didn't balls it up, which I'm hesitant to admit they'd probably find a way to do :/

i could care less about a warhammer40k mmo, i want to see dawn of war 3, but most of all a sequal to company of heroes.

both warhammer and CoH should stay with Relic! i hope whoever gets the licences gets relic studios as well and keeps them together

Square Enix would neuter Saints Row, they'd make it a Just Cause set in the city with a GTA rags to riches storyline...We can't have that.

I do agree with everything else though.

I wouldn't mind the Red Faction series being picked up by Ubisoft... or by Square Enix, as I think Volition (the developer for both Red Faction and Saints Row)still retains the rights to the RF franchise. If SE wanted to pick up Saints Row, I could see them giving Volition the green light to bring Red Faction back to its former glory... perhaps starting with an HD remake of RF1 and RF2.

Give Company of Heroes to DICE. Can you imagine what they could do to it with Frostbite 2? The environments are already pretty damn destructible and graphics good, but DICE could take it to the next level.

BioWare are already making Generals 2 with Frostbite 2 so that would be something of your liking perhaps... Altough it would be awesome if DICE made it, they only make good games! :D

I initially thought of Activision for WWE before I read this article. THQ seem to have been changing things unnecessarily lately in that they'll hype up one big improvement every year while removing something else without letting anybody know. At least Activision would be pretty content in releasing a relatively unchanged game annually. With WWE's awesome "Create-an-X" modes I will pretty much make my own rosters anyway.

However Activision already had the rights to WWF way back when with Warzone/Attitude so it'd be unlikely. And seeing what they did to the Tony Hawk series I wouldn't want one of my favourite yearly games to become an industry joke. Maybe EA would be a better fit.

I would really like to see Double Fine pick up the Nickelodeon license. it wouldnt happen in a million years but to have them use their current four DLC games a year format on cartoons like Rockos modern life or Ren and Stimpy would be insane.

That would be amazing. Or Hey Arnold! along the lines of Costume Quest perhaps?

Alein pigeon shooting. Rockstar and Redfaction would be nice.

I hope they don't kill Darksiders and Saints Row, those are some of my favorite games. I also enjoyed Warhammer and Red Faction. I hope no one eff those up.

Most of these are good picks. But I say that darksiders would be a good fit with konami. I think they pulled of castlevania lords of shadow really well. And the two games are fairly similar.
