Horton still tops at the US box office

It was another successful weekend for Horton Hears A Who, as the CG ‘toon rode the Easter holiday to hold on to the top spot at the US box office. Slipping just 45%, Horton added $24.5 million to its $86 million total.

The Dr Seuss adaptation saw off competition from a variety of new movies, including Tyler Perry’s latest, Meet The Browns, which itself had a strong opening with $20.8 million and the new Fox horror Shutter, which arrived with $10.5 million.

There wasn’t much reason to celebrate in the Drillbit Taylor camp, however - despite bearing the Judd Apatow production stamp and featuring a script by Superbad’s team, the new Owen Wilson comedy faltered to a weak $10.3 million opening. Between this and Walk Hard, the whispers are naturally starting that the Apatow backlash is upon us. Here’s hoping Pineapple Express restores the faith.

At fifth, 10,000 BC made $9 million, bringing its current total up to $76.4 million, while in sixth place, Never Back Down found $4.8 million. That put it ahead of College Road Trip, which dropped 36% to seventh with $4.6 million.

At the bottom of the top 10, The Bank Job kept pulling in money slowly, with $19 million in its coffers to date, Vantage Point dropped to ninth place, running a current total of $65 million and new entry Under The Same Moon arrived quietly in 266 cinemas to make $2.7 million.
