I think that what will make this game great is the many small differences and quirks that it has compared to other MMOs

I have to say, this game flew completely under (or over?) my radar until very recently, now I'm looking forward to giving the MMORPG another try.

Nothing I read in this article hasn't been done in other mmos already. While I do plan to buy the game at launch it is because I have confidence in the devs to deliver a solid game. I have no illusions however that, PQs and a Champions online class mechanic will make the game unique.

I know other MMOs let you "sidekick" with high-level players, but I don't know of any that let you play with low-level characters, even at level cap.

What is the purpose of a level system if players can just be scaled up or down regardless of the situation? Does it allow players more variety in their build? What does gaining a level actually affect?

I'm moderately excited for this game, but some of these things have me skeptical. For one, I'm a little confused on how PvP works. Does it mean that gear (for competitive matches) means nothing, and that everyone is even? But the World vs. World is the opposite, yet everyone's stats are the same (like SWTOR), yet gear does effect your DPS/Heal output? Still, I'm excited. Skeptical, but excited. What do I have to lose?

Your equipment will still be high level, so you will have an edge, but it is still a challenge. Think like real life, even if you are an experienced warrior fully equipped etc, doesn't mean a peasant can't still hurt you, but you surely have an edge with all that armor.

Also you don't get scaled up, save for PvP, so you'll still need to be a high-level for hign-level content.

Gears means nothing in competitive matches. It's like Counter-strike - everyone goes in even. In World vs. World, everyone's stats are the same (like, core stats), but items change your stuff.

So if I'm a high level and my friends are low level I can go play with them but they can't come play with me?

I play with new players all the time in EVE Online. Granted it doesn't use a level system, but still

This seems to me just like a giant improvement on WOW. Still...I play EVE Online, and this doesn't sound like it comes even close to the metagame, competition, or even fun as EVE

Unless you PvP, yes. But you can play with them, and since most of the content is repeatable, you'll still get stuff.

Basically, in competitive PvP, everyone gets the same gear (respective to their classes of course) and bumped up to max level the moment you walk into the "lobby" zone. However, you have the option of customizing the gear with gems and such. All of your items have 1 or 2 slots that you can socket gems and stuff in for a more specialized item build. WvWvW, on the other hand, works more like other MMOs where you load in with your current gear/level. I've never played DAoC, but i heard it's quite similar.

One thing this article failed to mention is the type of community the game fosters. Having everyone able to revive and having groups happen dynamically without actual "partying" is amazing. Seeing people just stop what they're doing, running 100 meters across the zone just to rez you is great. Having loads of people just naturally congregate to tackle PVE encounters and cooperating instead of competing is brilliant. The bitterness that always festers between each faction of the Holy Trinity (especially between healers and the other classes) removed is awesome. Skeptics might brush off these points, but seeing these things happen just makes the experience so much more enjoyable.
  • Fenghoang - April 23, 2012 10:17 p.m.

True, but having all of them in one game is worth something though. =P They also have a personal story questline that's similar to AoC and SWTOR i believe. So far, from what I've seen, the PvP and public quests are very reminiscent of WAR and Rift, except executed SOOOOO much better.
  • Fenghoang - April 23, 2012 10:21 p.m.

Levels do matter because trait points are tied to it. I'm not sure if talent points are tied to levels or not, but I do remember you having to find talent point trainers or items/events across the world.

meh... MOAR GW2 HYPE. Well see what happens this weekend.

    The old republic was shit.

I must admit some of these convention changes sound great. After numerous mmo's I finally got bored of the current format with Warhammer online. Just another life sucking dash to level cap and pointless end game. Maybe this will be the first mmo I actually enjoy at my own pace. Most interested in how the world v world pvp plays out. I can't imagine how it won't just be a laggy mess of area effects though.
