Game music of the dead: Total Distortion

Game: Total Distortion

Song: You Are Dead (Game Over)

Composer: Unknown, but Joe Sparks probably has an idea

Above: You Are Dead from Total Distortion

Surprise! We usually reserve GMOTD for the weekdays, but seeing as it's Halloween and there's a song about death that we hold very dear, it's as good a time as any to share it with the rest of the world.

To be honest, I've never played Total Distortion or even seen it in motion. It's some kind of weird CD-ROM game from the days when "MOVING VIDEO!" was a big deal, so it's a fair guess that whatever gameplay it had in the early '90s has since eroded away. However, the concept (make alien music videos for people back on Earth) is brilliant, and the Game Over screen has to be the best/worst (and longest) Game Over song in videogame history. You thought were hot... guess what, you're not!

We first came across it back in TalkRadar 20 (one of our favorite episodes, btw), when after discussing the cheesiest game songs of all time, Mikel revealed he'd brought audio of a certain unsung game...

Above: It's only two minutes! Give 'er a listen!

Truly remarkable. Somewhere in between a Futurama parody song and real-life, Wal-Mart background music for the Halloween costume aisle. Whatever your opinion, rest assured it's now stuck in your head for the rest of the day. Enjoy!

Just heard this at the end of TalkRadar 125 and now it's stuck in my head. Jerks (who bring great entertainment).
  • Hypermonkey262 - November 1, 2010 7:46 a.m.

I've listened to every show multiple times, but 20 is still one of the best.
  • elpurplemonkey - November 1, 2010 6:27 a.m.

This song has ruined me for life. Whenever I hear a sentence that ends with 'dead,' I automatically sing to myself (dead, dead, you are dead, dead dead...)

I die in games all the time nowadays (I don't know what I'm doing wrong!) and an awesome Game Over song like this would soften the blow for my many frustrating failures. Happy Halloween GR!
  • Eaxis - October 31, 2010 11:14 p.m.

Clearly every game should have a song dedicated to when you die in a game. In Super Meat Boy I would have had to listen to this 9000 times!
  • TruckThunders - October 31, 2010 10:49 p.m.

Being dead has never been more funny and cheesy. This would be a great song to have on a loop when Trick-or-Treaters come to the door.
  • Tenfey - October 31, 2010 9:47 p.m.

You will never know just how much this song has delighted me since TalkRadar 20.
  • Bonesqaw - October 31, 2010 9:33 p.m.

I love this song way too much for it to be healthy. I introduced it to the people I play L4D with a while back. It's become kind of a theme song for us while we play.
