Game music of the day: Persona 4

Game: Persona 4

Song: Pursuing My True Self

Composer: Shihoko Hirata

Above: Pursuing My True Self from Persona 4

No your eyes don’t deceive you, we have done Persona 4 once already as the Game Music of the Day, but that one covered the catchy and always welcome Battle Music. Today’s on the other hand covers the equally catchy intro song Pursuing My True Self, which explains via phat beats a game about Japanese teens going to other dimensions during a busy year of school work.

There’s a lot to love about this peppy intro tune. The piano and trumpet start are counter to what you normally expect from J-pop, and that’s followed by a rap done in English. You may need a lyric sheet to keep up with what’s being sung, but it’s all very central to the theme of Persona 4. It mentions being “trapped in a maze of relationships” and “the sea of the unconscious,” which fits with a game about leveling up by making connections with your classmates and going through dungeons that represent the minds of confused teens.

It’s a perfect start to a lovely game, but you can only really appreciate the short but sweet song watching the very well animated, very yellow opening video that we leave you with. Sayonara!

Huzzah for Persona! The last time you put on gmotd I ended up buying it because I saw it there and never looked back. Hopefully it showing up again will get some else to buy it.

Love Pursuing My True Self. I think P3fes, the song that plays in P3 FES' intro is better, but this is still good. As good as Burn My Dread. Not particularily a fan of the song that plays for P3P.

I sat through the entire giant bomb endurance run of that game and it was worth it.

I think by now it's a given that any and all Persona songs could be in GMOTD. Makes it no less awesome though.
  • SideOfBeef - December 16, 2010 2:24 p.m.

I was wondering why this song wasn't included in the first GMOTD, and I'm glad it's here now. I don't particularly like the song but it's definitely quality, especially compared to usual game music. Also, hurray for (un?)intentional racism. *gong*.

Love P4 and there is enough good music on the soundtrack that you could do a whole month of game music of the day using the music
  • Hypermonkey262 - December 16, 2010 9:34 a.m.

Can Persona just be the Game Music of the Day every day?
  • R3DRUN - December 16, 2010 9:05 a.m.

I absolutely love Persona 4 and the OST that came with it.
  • Mamudo - December 16, 2010 8:01 a.m.

Love Love Loved P4 OST. The game is all around excellent
  • NathanXplosion - December 16, 2010 7:16 a.m.

You could do a GMOTD for every song form this game, the soundtrack is that great.

Any reminder of what must be, surely, the last truly GREAT game developed FOR PS2 as lead platform is a good one and I alwys thought the music for SMT/Persona games has been well chosen and well put together-just like the thoughtful, interesting and always endearing games themselves. @Ch3-don't feel you're the only one putting P4 top if the heap either! Plenty of us do! It's just like the way most fans put MGS3 top but I still think that what Koj pulled off tying everythiung together in MGS4 while still keeping the jokes and the detail was a bugger feat and more impressive all round experience. Then again choosing between four amazingly close to perfect(for their genre) games is always tough fun!

Nice choice Henry. Now you reminded me I haven't finished this game.

People constantly give me shit, but I personally think P4 is superior to P3, especially in terms of the soundtrack, both in quality and quantity. Maybe that's because I got hooked on it via the GB Endurance Run, but most likely because that j-pop is so damn catchy. I also think the P4 intro is better than the P3 one. The editing, although similar, is much nicer. Probably has something to do with the color palettes. Also^2, so as not to completely give P3 the short end of the stick, I'll pimp the best track from the game, IMO. It's the dorm music, and it's heard thoughout the whole game. I can't imagine getting through the game if it was bad...

Shoji Meguro is a fantastic composer, the more I listen to what he makes the better it gets.
  • NearNRiver - December 16, 2010 5:03 a.m.

Persona! So good it deserves to be done again! This music is really awesome.

Love me some Persona lol, what about Nevermore though? Mmm an even better one would have to be P3 FES, love that song
