Game: GoldenEye 007

Song: Control Station

Composer: Norgate, Kirkhope, Beanland

Last week Perfect Dark made the leap to Xbox Live Arcade, and judging by the review scores and general fan reaction, Rare's 10-year-old FPS still holds up. Perfect Dark was always billed as a spiritual successor to the N64 classic GoldenEye, which is how I plan to awkwardly segue into today's track.

GoldenEye was notable not just for its addictive and unparalleled multiplayer, but also its elaborate, stealth-heavy campaign that played like nothing else on the so-called "Fun Machine." This particular track is indicative of most of the game's music - freakishly upbeat and toe-tappingly catchy, not at all what you'd expect in a super-spy shoot 'em up.

If you're among the millions of former GoldenEye fans, be sure to check the GoldenEye: Source project that's updating the N64 original with fancy new graphics. Hopefully it's not yet another game that's shut down in the final hour.

Gaming and music collide in a train wreck of awful audio

I have this entire soundtrack on my iPod and love it.

I remember playing this game at my friend’s house on his N64 for hours. Still love this music, thanks for the blast from the past Brett. Also Brett have you listened to the Timesplitters 2 soundtrack? It's great and had people who worked on Goldeneye doing the music

It's not like rare owns it. they were the creators of the game, and ea, well ea lost the rights to the game (was a relief) until i found out quantum of solace was coming out, which has daniel craig (worst 007, and probably going to be known as the one who may finally nail the coffin to bond's demise. at least Pierce was able to revive it as he can do it, but who can revive it now after Daniel Craig drags Bond to the graves along with him? Casino Royale, i give it one lowsy point out of a hundred trillion. QOS, one out of 999 trillion. Hated it, hated it, hated it. Craig should Burn In HELL for all eternity for what he has done to Bond! anybody who thinks CR or QOS does not suck should hang themselves IMMEDIATELY! only 2 REAL Bond's come to mind, they are Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan. At least Roger Moore could act.

It helped that I didn't have a lot of money so I had a select few N64 games. Maybe that was one of the reasons I spent so long playing this game, you know along with it being bond related (super cool) and the gameplay isn't bad either. Track has killer bass along with the iconic bond pattern to contrast.

Damn, I REALLY need to play this game.
  • QWERTYCommander - March 23, 2010 1:03 a.m.

I agree Jacob. It's so slow. It would run faster if the buffer bar was made out of turtles arranged in a line.

What Jacob816 said. As long as you're changing stuff, can I has a new site redesign? kthxbai.

I have so many good memories of this game and soundtrack. Something always seemed un-nerving about the soundtrack. Kind of dark and creepy especially compared to what was out at the time.

Can GR please start using a new video player. The one you have now is so choppy, and the audio comes super stuttery.
  • Sukururu - March 22, 2010 11:31 p.m.

So much time playing it with my friends...remember it like it was yesturday
  • AMayer - March 22, 2010 11:07 p.m.

I remember I spent days upon days of my younger years just playing GoldenEye with my brother and neighbors. There was always the one person who would play as Oddjob, the cheap bastard. It was such an incredible game.
