Plot released for Ridley Scotts Prometheus

Fox has released a new brief description of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and it seems to confirm some of the rumours about the Alien prequel's storyline.

A leaked synopsis that found its way on to the web suggested that a group of scientists working for Weyland-Yutani discover that life on Earth was created by beings from another planet.

Based on that information they head into space to discover the key to life and encounter an alien threat.

The following text appeared on the official Prometheus page:

“Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner , returns to the genre he helped define. With Prometheus , he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.”

For comparison here's the previous synopsis from back in June:

“Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”

If you know your Greek mythology you'll be aware that Prometheus was a Titan who stole fire from the gods and had his liver eaten every day by a giant eagle as punishment.

Sounds like stealing the key to creation from humanity's makers might not be a great plan after all.

Prometheus opens on 1 June 2012.
