Why you'll be trading your DS Lite for a DSi

Watch the camera and sound player in action plus loads more

Words: Justin Towell, GamesRadar UK

Without any 'proper' new consoles on the horizon, it's new hardware iterations that will be clamouring for your money for the next year or three. And while PSP 3000 may have had little to offer over the PSP Slim and Lite except for some annoying screen interlacing, the new Nintendo DSi has a lot to offer over the DS Lite. A lot.

But is it all enough to warrant an upgrade? The system's yet to be given a firm release date in the West, but we can still take a look at the Japanese version to find out.

The camera
The most obvious addition to the even sleeker casing are the two cameras - one on the outside and the other facing you as you play. With the new SD card slot (which is in instead of the GBA cart slot but not in its place on the casing), you can take, store and transfer pictures easily. See both cameras in action below.

By the way, please excuse the poor quality of the screenshots and video on these pages - we can't take screenshots directly from the new machine yet so our own camera will have to do.

The camera can even be used in games - using the new DS Shop icon on the system's slick new front end menu, you can buy games (currently from the Japanese shop only), such as a sweet little Wario Ware game. You play it like EyeToy on PS2 and the movement recognition is excellent - but it is embarassing to have the game play back images of you playing it at the end of each go, displaying a weird montage-cut video on the title screen for all to see. It's really well done, though.

Music Player
One of the other big new additions is the ability to play MP3 files directly from an SD card. But the fun doesn't end there. There's a really impressive pitch and speed alteration tool which seamlessly alters the track in real-time as you drag the stylus across the screen. There are also some nifty digital signal processing effects, although quite why you'd want your small speakers to sound more like small speakers is beyond us. Check out the video.

You can also record your own voice and store sound clips on the SD card although there does appear to be a time limit on these.

Web Browser
An updated version of the Opera DS Browser that was released in 2006 has been packaged in with the new system and runs without the need for a memory expansion card. However, we found it just as slow (slower?) than the old version and we couldn't get some of our favourite sites to even load. GamesRadar does load, but not in its entirety as the browser still doesn't feature Flash. And that's simply inexcusable, seeing as most of the web needs it these days. This isn't as good as the PSP's browser, but certainly better than nothing.

Animation program
There's an animation program built in which lets you create your own hand-drawn animations using a system of frames. It lets you record sound effects too, although if you record it at one speed and then speed up your entire clip, the sound gets higher too. Funny stuff if you use it right.

Shop
That shop feature we mentioned earlier is a definite plus point. There are some neat little games and demos available to download directly to your DS from any WiFi hotspot. We particularly like the game with the bird who sticks out his tongue to collect falling objects, and the descending paper aeroplane is simple but addictive. There's even Dr Kawashima and his Brain Training to enjoy, although this doesn't seem to offer anything new from the time we've had with it.

Above: As simple as they get - guide the paper plane through the maze without letting it touch the side. Harder than it looks

Worth a punt
The new DS model is the perfect example of evolution. Looking at the original DS now, its blocky design looks decades old in comparison. Everything here is clean, bright, sharp and light. It's technologically excellent (except perhaps for that web browser) and it's got something of interest for everyone, from the amateur photographer or animator to fans of 8-bit music. It's still more of a novelty than a serious replacement for your iPod or digital camera, but in terms of handheld entertainment, it's only really lacking a built in video player before it's got the PSP completely cornered.

Is it worth an upgrade? Put it this way - if it wasn't for the loss of the GBA slot, we'd have traded ours already. So if you don't care for GBA games, then yes - upgrade and smile. If not... how does being the proud owner of two DS systems sound?

None of that really jumps out at me as any kind of important feature for a portable games console.

I expect these kind of gimmicky features from my phone, which has two cameras, MP3 playback and a web browser but the only thing I use, or want to use my DS for is playing games.

Being able to download games directly from the Shop might be useful but I think if my DS snuffs it I'll be buying another DS well before I buy a DSI.

@Laini - I suppose I should have mentioned it plays all the great DS games already available... well, except for Guitar Hero of course (due to the slot's omission). I see your point, though. However, it really is clearly superior to the old models when you play it, even when just playing Metroid. Bigger, sharper screens FTW.

I don't need to worry since I own a GBA anyway, and I'm really loving the downloadable games feature that will be rolling out.

my ds fat is absolutely knackered. i would've been buying a ds lite soon if the dsi wasn't coming out. i'm glad to see a proper upgrade to the ds. the ds lite really was just a ds filed down.

i'm excited about everything but the camera. nice to have, but i don't really see the point of it.

Im still with the DS original.
Mainly because i found the corners of the lite uncomfortable to hold when playing.

And like Laini said, these are all gimmicky features that i think i want on a portable console.

3 words: no GBA slot. Deal=broken.

I plan on getting a DS for my birthday this year, and when I do, it'll be a Lite.

Seriously cool. I'm considering buying it.

Considering how many people (myself included, since my original DS bit the dust) bought the DS lite when it was really, as fionnoh put it, "just a ds filed down," such a big leap in the features of the DSi is definately going to make it hotter than the lite in no-time. Sure, they're gimmicky features, but to put it simply, if the lite sold that well, I can probably guess what sales will look like when the DSi hits stores here.

And who knows, maybe Nintendo will get wise and use the profits to do something that the company can be proud of, like making some GOOD Wii games, rather than the crap we have now. And maybe they'll stop making diaper changing sims and generic crap(you know what I mean) for the Wii and DS as well...

nah that's hoping too much. It'd be great if it happened though...

At Taxtm. Nintendo dont make baby sims or anything like that except for Nintendogs and the "Wii" series.

Personally, I think they omitted the GBA slot and brought in the shop and internal memory to implement a Game Boy Virtual Console

i cant wait for this, im so happy that nintendo are finally embracing online gaming, what with wiiware and watnot, im definately gonna be getting one, seeing as my lite has a monumental crack across the hinge, nice article, just made me want it even more!

SOLD!!! The 8-bit mode for the music did it for me

I don't really like the position of the power button. It just seems like it would be too easy to accidentally turn off. That, and the GAMES that they have for the DS have never really struck me as being...well, you know, good. I bought the DS lite because I wanted to play some good Mario and Zelda games. But most of the DS games, are just shovelware. BABIEZ and BRATZ and HORSEZ and crap like that. The SD card slot on the DSI while good for people downloading demos and games online, will be a gold mine for home-brews and pirates. I think I'm going to skip on this one, until they release a new version in a few years that's lightr and 5%brighter like the iPods....
FierceDeity  - 9 months 29 days ago
no thanks, i have an mp3 player and a 3 megapixel phone and photoshop (as well as the crappy wii photo channel) already, why would i want cut down versions of these on a ds especially as they're getting rid of the gba slot. i mean i literally just bought zelda minish cap.
how bout they make a GameBoy DS with all their handheld games compatible. playing all the pokemon games, super mario land, links awakening, phantom hourglass, super mario bros 3, metroid fusion, new super mario bros and mario kart ds all on the same console would be epic
Laini  - 9 months 29 days ago
@GamesRadarJustinTowell: My main point about getting another DS before a DSI would simply be because I imagine the DS will become quite cheap once the DSI is on the market.

I don't know if Nintendo plans to fade it out or whatever.

A slightly larger and sharper screen would be nice though, no denying that :P

I think the paper airplane game was originally in the WarioWare gamecube thingy.
It was a multiplayer... I was really at it.

That's the only reason that I remember it.

I'm pretty sure that it can't play MP3's, but rather AAC music files. This is the format that Apple uses with Itunes purchases. Could Nintendo not have allowed both?
