Bionicle Heroes

Unlike it's console counterparts, Bionicle Heroes for DS is worth checking out

It has been said time and time again that good things come in small packages. This holds true for Bionicle. A series of cool (little) robotic toys with a cool story, Bionicle has been a great success for LEGO. While the latest game based on the product, Bionicle Heroes, is a bland, fans-only affair home consoles, it would be a mistake to overlook the game for the Nintendo DS. Unlike its sister products, the DS version of the game is a decent little game that offers players quality action on Nintendo's wildly popular (and little) handheld system.

Bionicle Heroes is a first-person action game that puts you in the role of a transparent lead character that has to rescue the heroic Toa. The gameplay is quite similar to Metroid Prime Hunters, but with more robots, more collecting, and one significant twist. As you discover masks, you gain new elemental powers. In addition to being the obvious solution for level obstacles and boss fights, these new powers let you unlock hidden areas in each stage, which extends the game's replay value. The changeable mask system works much better in the DS game than it does the console ones. Overall, Bionicle Heroes is a good mix of shooting, collecting, and boss fighting that's surprisingly good. The single-player mode is arguably on par with Metroid's, while the multiplayer is decidedly a notch below.
