Daigo wins Super Street Fighter IV tournament at Evo Championship Series 2010

Daigo “The Beast” Umehara won the Super Street Fighter IV tournament at this year’s Evolution Championship Series. The renowned Street Fighter champion beat out Ricky Ortiz’ Rufus with his signature Ryu. Check out the final fight below.

Daigo Umehara is considered by many to be the world’s most famous Street Fighter player – and is best known for his exciting comeback against pro-player Justin Wong in the Evo Championship Series 2004’s Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike tournament. Daigo bested his rival Justin Wong at the Evo Street Fighter IV tournament last year.

But Justin Wong was eliminated from the competition early this year. His unexpected defeat came at the hands of Taiwanese player GamerBee, who beat Wong’s Rufus with Adon, a character not commonly picked at the tournament level. GamerBee’s success with Adon was so surprising that it caused the SRK Adon forums to crash due to the number of visitors curious about Adon strategies.

Evo was fascinating to watch, but unfortunately (as someone above me mentioned) the stream crapped out right at the end and (just about) no one got to see Daigo win. A lot of fun though.

Did anyone else think that the commentator for the Justin Wong vs. Gamerbee match was having a orgasm over the match? He was totally flipping out, and I had to stop the video before I fell on the floor laughing.

EVO was epic, and I hate the word epic.

This was an epic match to watch when it was live. This year was the first EVO i ever watched and I am simply amazed by the excitement and intensity it provides. This competition is also the reason that I will buy Super Street Fighter 4 with a fighting stick. I can't wait until next year and I really want to see their Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament.

YES! A GIEF MAKES FINALS! Only to lose later, but good job Vangief and your pad ways.

Practically watched the whole evo. Just watching gamerbee take down justin and the reaction of it all made me realize how much of a fan I am for this series. The stream was pretty annoying..cutting off at the last round of the tournament basically. If I decide getting that serious about street fighter this year I might consider actually going.

@FelixTheCat Yeah, but for me at least it's kind of hard to cheer AGAINST Ryu.

Didn't know people took SF this seriously...pretty entertaining video, good match.

Adon is a poor character? since when? "A master with a rock can defeat a rookie with a gun" - Darktone has spoken...

This was definitely an Evo.......if only the connection didn't keep fucking up. That was infuriating, especially when the match cut out at around the 3rd match of the Grand Finals.

I'm not a Street Fighter fan, not enough to watch EVO, but DAMN was that an amazing experience, especially when the crowd goes fucking wild.

Oo this are annoying to watch. I did like that Street Fighter III finish though, that was impressive :D
  • ScruffMoney - July 12, 2010 10:54 p.m.

I'm really surprised this got as much play as it did this year. The EVO tournament is much bigger than I thought.

Daigo is a monster, he's just an all around amazing player, but I wanted Ricky. O to win so bad, just so I could see the obvious underdog just steal the victory. Plus Ricky is an amazing player. This year was fantastic though, every single player performed to their best potential (besides some like Floe when he was playing Ricky. Floe is usually way better) and absolutely raped in some of their matches. Vangief was especially great. Hopefully next year will be as great as this year. Evo FTW!!!
