It might just be nostalgia blurring my memories again, but there was just something about the explosions in Destroy All Humans! that really caught my eye and then stuck in my brain. Maybe it's because they weren't 'realistic' explosions - instead, they were sharp and sudden things - but when I first played the game it was truly awesome to blow up a car or three. And then they got underwhelming, but that happens to everything, I guess. Even explosions...

    84.8675% eh? Prove it

What about the explosion at the end of Half-Life 2? Sure it was frozen in time at that particular moment and didn't finish, but it is used by many G-modders because it's a model instead of an effect, making it easier to use for beginners and can be placed easily.

HOW DARE YOU NOT MENTION THE EXPLOSIONS FROM STAR FOX 64?!!! Or the explosion code from Tomb Raider II.

What about Kefka blowing up the world in FFVI

What about blowing up Megaton in Fallout 3!? When you do it at night it looks awesome. And Split Second has an insane amount of explosions lol. Barr those two I agree agree completely with the list! Excellent article :)

Just Cause 2! Every thing you do in that game is exploding stuff!

This list needs some Freespace 2. Best explosions ever. When a big capital ship exploded you got the hell out of the way because it could and would kill you, and so you could see the pretty colors.

Acorn computers. Wow, our school had an old one as well. The old days, huh?

I really like billowing volumetric clouds of smoke burst forth from the explosion. But my favorite is from the Ratchet and Clank Future series, cel-shaded detonations are the best.

I am disappointed that the little girl being demolished in MW3 wasn't included. I wanted to laugh at that again.
  • talleyXIV - April 6, 2012 9:56 a.m.

    Yeah Megaton definitely got snubbed.

Aye, the old days :P Drawing stuff in Flare and trying to make the file size go over 4k, as if that somehow made your picture better than your mates' :D

Having just beat Symphony of the Night for the first time the other day, I have to say just about every one of the ridiculous amount of enemies in that game exploded in some way upon death. Even in cases where it didn't make sense, like with plants or books. One of the early enemies (the Bloody Zombie) would, upon being killed, have a blood explosion, split in half, spurt out a fountain of blood, and then have a regular explosion. Ridiculous, though I'm certainly not complaining. And I'd be remiss in my duties to not mention Star Fox 64 in a list of explosions. Regular enemies explode of course, but the best were the bosses. Sure the visual itself was basically a redish orange sphere, but that sound effect is possibly the most satisfying explosion sound ever. Just watch the train crashing into a supply depot in that game, with it's something like 7 explosions, and tell me that isn't awesome.

Needs more Just Cause 2 explosions...

Y U NO INCLUDE EXPLOSIONS FROM THE OLD SCHOOL CONTRA GAMES!?!?!? But in all seriousness, I was almost 100% sure this article would include the explosions from the original Contra back in 1987, as old as that game was, the explosions were undeniably amusing to look at, not to mention that pretty much everything that moved was automatically considered an enemy and absolutely had to be blown up :D But asides from that, the article was awesome :D

Why... why didn't you include Vanquish? That game was a love letter to explosions, and fantastically colorful and brash ballistics in general. I'm pretty sure all the enemies in the games were made robots specifically so they could reasonably explode once you killed them. 99% of enemies in the game that you face go out in a beautifully rendered blast, and the makers knew that the resulting explosion was always your own little reward for each enemy down. The larger the enemy... the bigger the resulting explosion. When you take down one of those huge Argus robots, it topples over to the ground, firing off dozens of swarming volleys of rockets in its death throes, and then obliterates in a screen-whitening explosion that rumbles the entire environment, the whole screen. And it wasn't just about the big explosions, either. There were so, so many little details, tiny little explosions going on every passing instant that you'd hardly notice until you manually slowed the game down with the bullet-time mechanic... as you unload your gun into a robot's armor, every projectile strikes it with a explosive knock that visibly judders that part of its anatomy and chips away at the pieces of metal, and every shot fired from every weapon (whether wielded by you, your allies or your enemy) has a resulting muzzle-flash explosion and smoke trails and such that you could see in intimate, damn near pornographic slow-mo detail. It's amazing how well that game ran in spite of all the amazing things (which were in all likelihood explosions, and if it wasn't an explosion it was likely lasers, which are just as awesome) happening in it all at once in any given scenario, in just about any instant. Damn I love that game.

More games should use fire propagation, it really cool in Far Cry 2.

Dropping rocket artillery on an oil rig in Mercenaries 2 resulted in quite an explosion if I recall correctly.
