BioShock Infinite may throw multiplayer from the airship

Developer Irrational Games has always taken a conservative approach to multiplayer modes. Only two of the studio’s games, SWAT 4 and Tribes: Vengeance, enabled online play. Recent comments from Ken Levine, creative director for BioShock Infinite, indicate that the newest BioShock title will continue the company’s tradition of approaching multiplayer with skepticism.

“I will say that we experiment with things,” Levine stated, “but for us we are never interested in making a multiplayer mode you could just play in some other game.”

Levine went on to say that trying to compete with Halo or Call of Duty would only waste development time. He referenced Left 4 Dead, but only as inspiration for part of the BioShock: Infinite trailer.

These comments might be surprising if they came from any other studio, but they’re typical for Irrational Games. Levine’s views on multiplayer in BioShock Infinite are simply a repetition of the studio’s position on the original BioShock. The addition of multiplayer to BioShock 2, which seemed to just sort of come and go (know anyone still playing it?), has likely steeled the studio’s stance against the inclusion of anything but the most revolutionary online play.

Ok I"am Sick of this nonsense argument that Bioshocks 2's Multiplayer took away from the game or was not necessary.Look when you go to Subway and get a sandwhich and they give you a free bag of chips does that take away from your sandwhich?will you not eat them? That's your choice does not mean your right.Multiplayer is a good thing thing to add to a game like Bioshock. Some of us can only play story mode so many times and Multiplayer gives us the same flavor of the game while giving us a new expeiernce so get over yourselves people.Bioshock Infinite will be Awesome but no Multiplayer and after one or two playthroughs of single player and that is nothing more than trad in fodder .

The multiplayer for BioShock 2 was actually pretty good, but I wouldn't feel bad if multiplayer for this was left on the cutting room floor.

I read an article by Ken Levine in a Gamesinformer a while back. He seems exactly the kind of mind this industry not only profits from, but improves as well. I tip my hat to you, good sir.

I'm going to assume that this will be a horror game nad I have never played a horror game where multiplayer fit well (except Left 4 Dead, of course). I hope it doesn't have any of that.

Thank god, Bioshock 2's multiplayer was so half-asses, much like a lot of games these days.
  • HawtKakez - August 21, 2010 1:54 a.m.

I'm proud of them for not taking on multiplayer. I've gotten real sick and tired of everything having a multiplayer mode whenever it's clear that people only select a few multiplayer and games and rarely try other things. Ken Levine has my respects.

Bioshock 2's multiplayer was just basically Bioshock 1 in a multiplayer format. I'll admit, I kept my copy of 2 just because I still like the multiplayer, and it upsets me when people dog the multiplayer when a lot of people didn't even give it a chance as soon as they saw "OMG NO BIG DADDY DRILL I R HATE GAME!" I think if people would have just gotten a simple tonic called Leg Up they would have been in love with it. I know I still haven't gotten bored of sitting on a roof sniping people with a pistol. =D But on topic. It wouldn't surprise me if they did forgo multiplayer just to make the singleplayer experience a better one, and they definitely wouldn't sink any lower in terms of how much I like the company, but it would be nice to see what they could do with the floating airships changing the maps around, and maybe even adding a map creator allowing you to use pre-determined blocks of city, much like Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver allowed you to do with the Safari Zone. Either way, I'll definitely be picking the new Bioshock up, and as to if I keep it or not, that depends on, you guessed it, multiplayer.

"The addition of multiplayer to BioShock 2, which seemed to just sort of come and go (know anyone still playing it?)" Yea... you, today at 11PM PDT until 1AM PDT. Good to know that they aren't guna shove some bland multiplayer mode in and divert time and resources from the single player unless they come up with something worth it.
  • LordGremlin - August 20, 2010 11:05 p.m.

@oufour: Bioshock 2 is a money grab. It's story is no more than fan fiction. Bioshock 1 story was finished.
  • Corsair89 - August 20, 2010 11:04 p.m.

Yes! Bioshock 2s multiplayer was tacked-on crap.
  • Redeater - August 20, 2010 10:51 p.m.

Thank christ! Less money pissed away on multiplayer garbage = more single player fun!
  • ThatGuyFromTV - August 20, 2010 10:40 p.m.

I actually liked the Bioshock 2 multiplayer, but it was nothing compared to the singleplayer. Like GR said before, if they put the multiplayer's time and man hours into making the singleplayer that much better...
  • bryanthelion - August 20, 2010 10:39 p.m.

    Freedom Force had multiplayer...
  • OneToBoner - August 20, 2010 10:25 p.m.

    Ah Ken Levine, my messiah.
  • oufour - August 20, 2010 10:24 p.m.

good! i'm tired of hearing a how bioshock 2 is a money grab because it has multiplayer.
  • aperson789 - August 20, 2010 10:23 p.m.
