Best ever gaming remakes

How many gamers long for a remake of Final Fantasy VII? Or An HD remake of Sonic 2? On the surface, it doesn't look like rehashing your old games would make business sense as everyone's already bought them once. Why buy them again, right? Wrong!

Here are eight perfectly good reasons why remakes are totally worth the effort.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes

Gamecube may have only one Metal Gear Solid game, but it is a blinder. Following the events of the first game but with added Hollywood flare and (then) next-gen graphics, it's become a collector's item. And rightly so - the best version of Metal Gear Solid isn't even available on a Sony machine and that's a massive coup. And where else can you see Solid Snake dodging bullets like Neo from the Matrix? exactly.

Rez HD

Xbox Live Arcade was just made for games like this. Simple concepts, 60fps HD graphics and gorgeous special effects all wrapped up in an attractive price-point. It's not just a straight port, either, with extra graphics options, a new play mode... oh, and the option to make your second controller emulate the Trance Vibrator. Mmm... rumbly.

Above: Stylistically, Rez is still one of the best-looking games ever

Dead or Alive: Ultimate

This one's been almost completely forgotten, which is a shame as it's one of the best entries in the series. The game came on two discs - one containing a high-res version of the very first Dead or Alive and the other with an Xbox 1-quality do-over of Dead or Alive 2. The latter is almost as good-looking as DOA4 and the stages are superb. And seeing the original game's 2D backgrounds scaled smoothly and effortlessly is great - even if the boob jiggle is the most unrealistic in the series. All the girls would end up with black eyes in this one.

Daytona USA 2001

Daytona had already had a 32-bit remake with the Championship Circuit Edition on Saturn, but it wasn't the home conversion that fans deserved. But as one of Dreamcast's curtain call exclusives, along it came, with more tracks, sensational graphics and some of the best crash animations in any game ever. Barrel-rolling your Hornet with smoke billowing from the engine cover was fantastic. And it's something that deserves an XBLA/PSN remake, especially as very few territories got to take the game online for multiplayer racing.

You guys forgot about (breathe in) Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (breathe out), Prince of Persia Classic and especialy Bioni Commando Rearmed. I didn't even know about the Conker remake, can I still get this on my 360 from XBox Live Arcade? Loved The Twin Snakes and the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil, by the way, haven't played the other ones.

Personal favorite choice for an HD remake? Eternal Darkness. Hell yes.
  • CenotapheR - April 6, 2010 11:33 a.m.

I would die right away if there was a remake of a 1992 PC game called Moonstone: A Hard Days Knight developed by Mindscape. This game still gives me the thrills, 18 years later. An everlasting gem!
  • Hellhog - April 6, 2010 11:34 a.m.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Nothing better than the great story, revolutionary co-op, and improved SvM from PT. This game with achievements, higher resolutions, and Xbox Guide functionality would be a for sure buy. I would even pay $60 for it. (maybe throw in SC and SCPT singleplayer for good measure)

...especially Bionic Commando Rearmed. I hate typos. I'd love to see a remake of Kid Icarus, simply because I never played the game on NES as a kid and it's still regarded a classic. Same goes for Goldeneye; I never had an N64. Resident Evil 2 and 3 and the first Silent Hill could also use a nice update.
  • OnyxOblivion - April 6, 2010 11:36 a.m.

Remake Morrowind. Pretty please! The atmosphere in that game is still better than Oblivion's, if the gameplay is not up to snuff. So, updating it would make perfect sense.
  • MaynardJ - April 6, 2010 11:37 a.m.

Eternal Darkness and Chaos Theory still look fine, but if an HD remake can make the atmosphere and experience even better, I'm in.

@MaynardJ - Actually, after much discussion we deliberately left out Super Street Fighter II HD. Dave H swears the online mode is full of glitches and he should know. Also Prince of Persia Classic didn't really do it for me - much prefer the Game Gear version. But yes, Bionic Commando is highly deserving.
  • GRwarrior - April 6, 2010 11:41 a.m.

@OnyxOblivion Hell yes to Morrowind, been hoping for an update to that since I finished Oblivion
  • Imgema - April 6, 2010 11:46 a.m.

Comix Zone please! Remake it. Make it only hand drawn 2d of course. I want lots of animation frames and even 60 fps. It should be better than high quality cartoon. Oh and resident evil on GC is the best in the series and the graphics are still look amazing. The high-detailed 3D models and real time shadows blend perfectly with the backgrounds. If it was HD it would be much prettier than the boring looking RE5

Some more suggestions: Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame Doom 1 and 2 Duke Nukem 3-D Streets of Rage (or any other side-scrolling beat 'em up from the SNES and Mega Drive days) Soul Reaver Terminal Velocity (does anyone else know this game?) Tekken 2 Soul Blade Lemmings

I actually don't like MGS: TS purely because of the Matrix action, too over the top for me, and also the voice acting, although re-recorded, is the worse of the two, in my opinion. Otherwise the game would be good, though. I'd want to see the whole Legacy of Kain series in HD remakes, as well as Tekken 3, which in my opinion is the best entry in the series so far. Ace Combat 2 or 3 would be nice too, as well as Final Fantasy VIII (Yes, I went there). Oh, and Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy, whatever).
  • DigitalSensationUK - April 6, 2010 12:11 p.m.

Nice list but what about Wipeout HD?!
  • EnragedTortoise1 - April 6, 2010 12:13 p.m.

Ratchet and Clank Collection. That is all I want. First three games on one disc a la GOW Collection , with individual trophies for each would be EPIC.

Red Alert 2 with current RTS graphics, that would be soooooo good and definitely Jedi Power Battles omg that game is so amazing and hardly anyone I know has played it, remake that and youve got the best star wars game in years

I had a dream that "Conker's Bad Fur Day: Live and Reloaded" was on the Xbox Live Arcade. This needs to happen as it is a fantastic game, already has Live multiplayer and boasts gorgeous graphics. And I need to stop playing video games minutes before I go to sleep.
  • Silentboy - April 6, 2010 12:22 p.m.

Star Fox 64 or GTA Vice City are prime for good HD remakes
  • MaynardJ - April 6, 2010 12:23 p.m.

I played Jedi Power Battles but never got past the armadillo boss.
  • Hurricrane - April 6, 2010 12:41 p.m.

I want a System Shock 2 remake or a Freedom Force remake... so baisically anything Irrational has done. I'd also go for Mark of Kri or any space shooter
  • Skidd777 - April 6, 2010 12:41 p.m.

I'm wishing for remakes of the PS2 Ratchet & Clank games, also the original Playstation Spyro games.
