A salute to swine

These pigs are guaranteed not to kill you

Words: Shane Patterson on May 1, 2009

We don’t know about you, but we’ve been thinking a lot about pigs this week. It’s probably because we’ve read the word “swine” in almost every news headline. Apparently there’s this flu traipsing about that made this week’s terror alert in America. And while we hear it’s dangerous, yet incredibly treatable, this “immediate threat to our lives” shouldn’t keep you from enjoying the pigs we’re about to present to you. And no, it’s not because we’re hoping to stave off the viral outbreak by appeasing the pigs responsible. In fact, we at GamesRadar welcome our new swine overlords.

Farmyard Party: Featuring the Olympigs – Wii

Above: There’s something slightly disingenuous about a pig doing exercise

Super Smash Bros Brawl – Wii

Above: Powerful rulers shouldn’t be able to transform into gigantic wild boar beasts, but Ganondorf gets to do whatever he wants. It’s a perk

Harvest Moon: Magical Melody – GameCube

Above: We found the little guy poking his head above the ESRB rating. YOU CAN’T HIDE FROM US

Muppets: Party Cruise – PS2

Above: Miss Piggy unicycles her way through one of those weaksauce family-only party cruises

The World Ends With You – DS

Above: Defeating Pig Noise will nab you extra Pins and delicious bacon

Porky Pig’s Haunted Holiday – SNES

Above: We thought Porky was the cutest pig with a speaking disability we’ve ever known, until we found the following clip:

Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire – Game Boy Advance
Spoink and Grumpig

Above: Spoink evolves into Grumpig at level 32, always retaining that cute little tail

Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal – Game Boy Color
Swinub and Piloswine

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl - Nintendo DS
Mamoswine

Above: That little guy evolves into an insane combination of pig and wooly mammoth by Diamond/Pearl

Viva Pinata – Xbox 360
Rashberry and Pigxie

Above: Production Editor Carolyn Gudmundson sez:

This one is pretty interesting because you get a Pigxie by romancing a Rashberry (pig) with a Swanana (swan). The pigxie looks really cute in still images, and he IS really cute in the game, but when you see him in motion, it’s kind of creepy/sad looking, because he’s obviously somewhat deformed… His legs are different lengths and he kind of hobbles around awkwardly, and he has wings but he can’t really fly very well… And there’s some joke in the game about some things not being intended by nature, etc… He’s still really cute though, you just feel kinda bad for him.

Tombi remains my favourite game of all time and for a site that writes pages on games that died at retail, tombi is sadly under represented

What about Mega Man Legends 2? You can kick pigs to become more evil and also have a pig at one point. You can give it away for food to a lady who was "looking for a pet" even.
