LBP didn't fail because it was original, it failed because they took the piss with pricing by giving you the bare bones and charging through DLC for almost EVERYTHING else. Oh and FGS, okami isn't good, it's soooo boring!!!!

Good catch on Mickey Land of Illusion... Damn they have to make a 3D game like it, with tons of gadgets to acquire like those old Mickey games.

Maybe some of these borrowed features are the best of pre production ideas. Maybe they tried something original and it was crap. Bayonetta is a special case due to being made by the same guy but is also a totally awesome tribute to all things Sega.

Great article. It's funny how close the industry is. Despite the fact Uncharted: Drake's Fortune "copied" Gears Of Wars cover system, Cliff Belenski said the Gears 2 cover system was "copied" Of Drake's Fortune.

Cheers for the heads-up about the Metal Gear 2 mistake - it was exactly that. One I had fixed in the text before it went live, but not the headline. Fixed now. As for Halo, of COURSE it's a good game. I personally rate Halo 1 higher than Halo 3, but Halo 2 is best. What a shame it's going off-line in April.

I think all the comparisons are done to more recent titles because they are more recent and fresh in our memory, which makes the article easier to follow. If they used older games (the birth givers to these functions), there would be a lot of ppl scratching their heads and googling the shit out of the article. Plus, all of these functions have evolved and are far more polished than it's founding fathers, so it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to compare it to them. Of course Gears didn't "invent" the cover system. Nor did Halo "invent" the health re-gen system. There just might only be a handful of us who can pinpoint their origins without using Wikipedia.

"The console crash trick is from... Metal Gear Solid" No, it really isn't. It's Eternal Darkness, which you name-checked underneath it. Rocksteady confirmed it as the inspiration in a recent PCZone interview about the game.

Any game with any user input is a rip-off of Pong.

Like normal, your list is pretty incomplete and fail. Are you saying Halo isn't totally amazing or is original? Cause you're wrong lol. Halo's a damn good game but NOTHING about it is original. Regenerating shields? Tribes 2. Limited to two guns? Done before, etc.. everything Halo is claimed to have that's original was done before it was announced lol. Even Halo 3's "great innovated round saving" isn't innovative, good, yes, but it was done before through Valve's games and saving their replays. Less fail, guys.

In a way, it makes sense that the best games are the ones that refine instead of innovate: it's much harder to create a mechanic that's excellent off the bat that make it better over time.

may tinkz xboxrulez is anoyingz as fuks. Dude, you can spell words like "buisness" right, but not "me"? you say "may". Seriously, I hope you have better things to do man, because this is just sad. You're pretending to be an idiot fanboy. Get a girlfriend mate, you need one badly. 4 times served there with side a side of gravy.

@linkganon The point of a sequel is to build upon what has already been established. Of course Halo 3 is very similar to Halo 2. You don't buy a sequel and expect it to be drastically different from its predecessor. You buy it because you liked what you already experienced. Therefor, Halo 3 should be like Halo 2. They are in the same series and should feel generally the same.
  • Cyberninja - February 10, 2010 11:32 p.m.

you could also say all fighters borrow from one another and @ xboxrulez we all now you can typr normaly so please that will help and i will buy a xbox if you do
  • linkganon - February 10, 2010 11:15 p.m.

i know this is pretty much the same series but i have to say halo 3 borrowed everything from halo 2 except for levels and graphics. they both are the exact same game, just one's on the 360. maybe hideo should release mgs on the 360 and make the red ring of death appear during the psycho mantis fight to make people think their system screwed up.
  • Bloodstorm - February 10, 2010 11:05 p.m.

That part in Arkham Asylum scared me to death. I had my Elite for only a month and I though my Xbox just died on me. I was so glad it was part of the game.
  • Metroidhunter32 - February 10, 2010 11:02 p.m.

I never realized just how much was ripped off. BTW, you say that the conole crash comes from MGS2, but you fight Phyco in MGS1. Also whoever is playing resi4 is dead, there's a baghead 2 inches away.
  • robotechandnarutosucks - February 10, 2010 11 p.m.

Originality died after the 32-64 bit era ended.
  • witchking - February 10, 2010 10:12 p.m.

"Witch time" - surely can be traced back to The Matrix, 4 years before Viewtiful Joe and very similar to "Bullet time" in Max Payne which was made 2 years before Viewtiful Joe?
  • witchking - February 10, 2010 10:02 p.m.

Funny, I remember playing a game that used the same health system as Uncharted 2 a full year before halo came out. It was The Getaway on PS2
