The Game: Spider-Man 2 (PS2, Xbox, GC, PC)
The Star: Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Don’t get us wrong. We love the Spider-Man movies and the Spider-Man games continue to stand out as one of the few exceptions to the rule that games based on movies have to completely suck. But while Tobey Maguire’s “Aww shucks, I’m just a regular guy with all these super powers” angle works well enough on the big screen, his voiceover performance in the game sounds terrible.
Peter seems to be in a constant state of apology. He’s sorry that he missed his university class. He’s sorry that he’s late to meet Mary Jane. He’s sorry that he messed up a pizza delivery when he handed an angry customer a messed up pie. And we’re sorry that the game’s attempt to follow the film’s plot winds up making Tobey Maguire sound like a sycophantic thumb sucker instead of Spider-Man, the superhero. Here’s an example of one of the many apologies you’ll hear in what was supposed to be an action packed title.
