This roguelite with an inky art style looks like Hades with Chinese mythology, and it's out now
Realm of Ink is "an Eastern fantasy world, painted in ink"
If you're looking for another Hades-style roguelite to fill the hours, Realm of Ink looks like the one you don't want to miss out on.
As we see in a trailer at The Future Games Show Summer Showcase, the roguelite-style gameplay immediately puts you in mind of Hades. We see rooms filled with many enemies that are cleared out by a weapon-wielding protagonist. What makes Realm of Ink stand out, though, is the painterly art style.
Each environment you come across is brought to life by a blend of classic Chinese ink-wash art and rich, vibrant color palettes. The visual direction also points to the game's inspirations, as it's billed as "an Eastern fantasy world, painted in ink."
- Play Realm of Ink on Steam now
As you venture deeper into the game, you'll battle "Realm Guardians" to see into their pasts so that you might figure out the future. There are also over 20 unique creatures that are "steeped in distinctive Chinese folklore and backstory, including the cunning Fox Demon, the elegant Peony Fairy, and the elusive Mirror Sprite."
Thankfully, you won't have to tackle this one alone. You'll tackle Realm of Ink with an ink pet by your side, but that's not the only way you can change up the gameplay. There are dozens of different forms and weapons you can mix and match to fit your play style, over 40 Ink Gems that'll change up each run, and over 200 artifacts that will "unlock vast possibilities and enhance playstyles."
Realm of Ink is out now.

I joined GamesRadar+ in May 2022 following stints at PCGamesN and PocketGamer.Biz, with some freelance for Kotaku UK, RockPaperShotgun, and VG24/7 thrown in for good measure. When I'm not running the news team on the games side, you'll find me putting News Editor duties to one side to play the hottest JRPG of 20 years ago or pillaging the depths of Final Fantasy 14 for a swanky new cloak – the more colourful, the better.
