CSA: The Confederate States Of America review

This amusing provocation piece sets the question, “How would the course of American history have altered had the South won the Civil War?” Writer/director Kevin Willmott styles CSA in the form of a mockumentary, with authentic archival footage combined with ‘expert’ commentators (played by actors), a pompous narrator, doctored photographs and fake interviews. In this alternative version of events, the Confederacy rout the Yankees: slavery is established in every state, Southern America is invaded to establish a “tropical Empire” and a peace treaty is signed with Hitler. Admittedly, coherence drops drastically after the post-World War Two segment, but stick around for the credits to see how the shocking ‘adverts’ seen throughout CSA for the likes of Sambo axle grease are based on genuine historical products.
