Sebastian Junger’s tribute to his late friend, a gifted war photographer with whom he co-directed the Oscar-nominated Restrepo , is more sincere obituary than searching doc.

It’s a portrait of the man rather than an investigation of the craft which took him to the combat zones of Afghanistan and ultimately took his life.

Junger knows photojournalists are “part of the machine”, but Hetherington sought the humanity amid the horror; war was the backdrop, never the subject.
