Warhammer Online shutting down in December

EA and Games Workshop are shutting Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning down after five years of operation. Developer Mythic announced on the game'sofficial website that its remaining servers will go offline on Dec. 18, and it will no longer accept three-month subscriptions as of today.

The World of Warcraft challenger earned our accolades when it debuted in 2008. Since then it has spiraled from relevance, and its population/server count went with it. Several projects meant to expand the game were were left by the wayside over the years, producer Carrie Gouskos said in a letter to players--including the MOBA-esque Warhammer: Wrath of Heroes, a vampire-themed expansion pack, and a free-to-play version of the game intended for Asian markets.

"Games Workshop has cultivated a world class IP," Gouskos said. "We were lucky enough to play in their universe for nearly a decade, with five great long years live. However, like all things--our contract has come to an end. Both Games Workshop and Mythic agreed to part ways, despite how hard it is emotionally on us to let the game go. It has been a tremendous honor to work with Games Workshop and even though we may be parting ways, our relationship with them remains strong."

Warhammer stalwarts have three months left on the battlefield before the end. We humbly suggest they WAAGH like it's 1999.
