A trifecta of big Resistance 3 announcements hitSony’s US blogtoday: first, the game’s gone gold, meaning it’s finished and on track for its Sept. 6 release. Second, the public multiplayer beta opens today, provided you’ve got one of the codes distributed in copies of SOCOM 4. And third, developer Insomniac has seen fit to release a new trailer, which offers up an overview of Resistance 3’s storyline, as well as a look at some of its newly upgraded weapons.
Resistance 3 represents a lot of big changes for its franchise, most of them for the better (so far), but the story may be one of the biggest. With a more character-driven, high-stakes feel than the comparatively by-the-numbers predecessors, Resistance 3’s narrative is driven by a sense of desperation and hopelessness in the face of ridiculous odds. And going by what we’ve seen so far, that’s actually managed to enhance the fun of playing the game, which is something of an achievement.

In addition to the completion, trailer and beta news, there was one more announcement to take in: the Resistance 3 disc will come loaded with several demos for PS3 games that have already been released, videos from ones that haven’t, and music videos and trailers from Sony Pictures and Sony music. Not quite as exciting as the opportunity to finally jump in and tackle the multiplayer yourself, but nice to know nonetheless.
