amiibo Touch & Play: Nintendo Classics Highlights taps Europe next week

They're collectible as heck, but what has your treasure trove of amiibo done for you recently? European amiibologists can put their slacking figurines to work next week, when amiibo Touch & Play: Nintendo Classics Highlights releases starting April 30.

The free Wii U app, which is called amiibo Tap: Nintendo's Greatest Bits in North America, lets users jump straight into three-minute scenes from 30 NES and SNES games by tapping an amiibo to the GamePad. It doesn't matter what kind of amiibo it is - each one will randomly unlock a single game, and you can cycle through multiple scenes by tapping the figure again and again. You can see how it works in this Japanese video demonstration.

The app is similar to Masterpiece Theater in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, right down to the time limits. Though in this case you just have to buy a ton of amiibo to unlock new titles, rather than completing in-game challenges.

It's still unclear when amiibo Tap: Nintendo's Greatest Bits will release in North America.

I got a BA in journalism from Central Michigan University - though the best education I received there was from CM Life, its student-run newspaper. Long before that, I started pursuing my degree in video games by bugging my older brother to let me play Zelda on the Super Nintendo. I've previously been a news intern for GameSpot, a news writer for CVG, and now I'm a staff writer here at GamesRadar.
