Load up the game and you should be prompted to download the update.

" I didn't want to misrepresent here. Instead, I'll let Epic Games tell you themselves. I've pulled this from an email they just sent:

The file size limitations prevent us from releasing it, not to mention we have things like split-screen support (which 360 already has), maps that are already in the 360 version, the integrated mod browser (which 360 doesn't support)… the list goes on. Obviously, we are big supporters of Xbox 360 (Gears, anyone?) but there are significant hurdles keeping us from shipping the Titan Pack for Microsoft's platform."

The 2009 D.I.C.E. summit is going down this week in the always wonderful Las Vegas, and it is here that Epic Games announced the winners of Phase 2 of the $1 Million Intel Make Something Real Contest. The way it works is simple: make the best mods for Unreal Tournament III and get a ton of cash. In this portion of the contest, $70,000 in prizes have been rewarded to mod makers who place in the categories.

These mods will be showcased next month at the 2009 Game Developers Conference. And that's a big deal if you think about it, as people that make these mods often get promoted to making games.

"You may remember a few months ago we reported here on Blend Games that there was an MMO-clone of Gears of War, it was codenamed Project E by Korean MMO developers GameHI. As you know, that game is pretty much strictly staying in the Southeast territories. However, that doesn't mean Epic isn't working on a new Gears of War MMO project of their own."
Speaking with TeamXbox, Rein has confirmed that the 360 UT3 disc will indeed feature exclusive Gears of War 2 video content.

"Yes there is a great video, narrated by CliffyB and Rod Fergusson, that gives a detailed overview of Gears 2 multiplayer and reveals some cool stuff. The video is exclusive to UT3 360," Rein told TeamXbox. "We think of it as a nice little bonus for the folks who buy UT3 360 which is an awesome multiplayer game in its own right."
The Xbox 360 version will feature five "exclusive" maps, split-screen capabilities, two new characters and the all-new Warfare mode. Of course, the online fragfest will also feature all the benefits of Xbox Live, with none of that pesky mod support.

Eurogamer reports:

Had you been on Play.com this morning, looking to purchase a copy of Unreal Tournament III for Xbox 360, you might have spotted something interesting.

The packshot shown on the site featured a sticker advertising that the disc includes a Gears of War 2 video.

The packshot is still there, but the sticker has since mysteriously disappeared.

This isn't the first time such a bonus has been hinted at. Back in April Mark Rein told Eurogamer, "You might want to keep a close eye on the Unreal Tournament 3 disc. There might be something Gears of War 2 related on that."

When asked if that something might be a new trailer he replied, "Might not be! Might be. Whatever!"

The achievements for Unreal Tournament 3 have been officially revealed by Xbox360achievements.org. The list contains 50 achievements in order to get the full 1000 points. At first look, the achievements have a Gears of War feel to them, with achievements for completing each chapter, completing the chapters on isane, as well as in co-op. On top of that, "Get a life.." is very reminiscent to the all so popular "Seriously.." achievement. Instead of getting 10,000 kills online, however, the task is to get 200 kills on 50 seperate days. Of course, that equals 10,000 kills, but with a bigger twist. For the entire list of achievements, hit the jump.

Eurogamer writes: "Level design hotspot 3D Buzz has decided to run its very own map-making competition for Unreal Tournament 3.

It aims to give beginners a shot at the big time by disallowing any custom content such as home-grown textures, models, and all that. The only bits you can use come as standard with the level editor.

Star prize is an impressive bounty of USD 1000, a PlayStation 3, plus an Epic-autographed copy of the game.

Better still, silky-haired Epic poster-child Cliff Bleszinski will do a video review of your level. As will the 3D Buzz team. Runners-up get a PS3 and an autographed game.

The very first contest is to design a deathmatch arena, and you must keep a work-in-progress diary on the 3D Buzz forum."

Welcome to the Rumour mill, VideoGamer.com's run-down of the big rumours currently doing the rounds in the video game industry. Every week they'll hunt down the juiciest stories and give their opinion on how legit they are. So, whether you want the ridiculous or the plausible, read on.

Movies and TV coming to PS3

The Rumour: Downloadable TV shows and full-length movies will be available on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 this summer.

Verdict: Sony isn't likely to sit back and let Microsoft mop up the downloadable content market. According to the LA Times Sony will offer premium content video this summer, and it makes perfect sense. While Sony is pushing Blu-ray hard as a point of difference to the Xbox 360, the PS3 currently doesn't have an option for the rental market - presumably what the download service would offer.

Plausibility rating: 4/5

Well Cliffy B. Has just unbanned "EpicJon" from the UTIII forums along with giving an update to the whole incident.... According to cliffy the maps are most likely a coincidence since the new map is a remake of Koos Galleon and goes on to say that in the past they've not only given credit to map creators but also paid them for their maps if they were officially released in Epic's games. Also don't forget that the User created map was only released about a month -> a month and a half ago.... a map that was made for an official release from Epic would have been in development far longer then that.

"Not just "with permission" but we've actually gone out and paid folks to license their maps when we've included them in one of our bonus packs or within one of our games.

I've got to catch a plane early in the morning but I told Jon we'll look into it and get him a response in the next day or two."

The map, while not being exactly the same, is a blatant rip off, it's a cargo boat, in the middle of the Artic ocean, with snow falling and with icebergs on the background. When EpicJon posted about his discontent in the Epic Forums he got banned and his thread deleted..."

OXM writes: "OXM took a cheeky picture of the achievements screen for Unreal Tournament 3, allowing you the first ever glimpse at how to grab gamerscore from Midway's FPS.

You can see the achievements in the attached picture (viewable at the source), with the Lock And Load achievement unlocked after we completed Chapter 1 of the storyline - essentially the tutorial mission for the game.

The achievements shown are:

# Lock and load
# Soldier's blood
# Does not compute
# Not in Kansas anymore
# Just business
# Bag of bolts

There are 50 achievements in total for Unreal Tournament 3 and as you might expect, a heavy handful of them are spread across multiplayer as well as single player."

Midway announced today that the Xbox 360 would finally be receiving Unreal Tournament 3 this summer. Unreal Tournament 3 will come with some new content, featuring two new characters and five new expansive maps. Aside from some minor additions, the game will come with split screen capability for multiplayer; this will be an Xbox 360 exclusive feature, so if you don't have Xbox Live you can still enjoy multiplayer fun.
Mark Rein: No chance of PS3 UT3 split-screen - PS3 owners "should be happy" with user-generated mod support (News)

PS3 owners can forget about split-screen coming to Unreal Tournament 3, Mark Rein has told VideoGamer.com.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at the official unveiling of the Xbox 360 version of the game in Las Vegas this week, Rein said that PS3 owners "should be happy" with the inclusion of user generated mod support.

When asked if split-screen will ever come to the PS3 version of UT3, Rein replied: "I don't think so, because this is what's in this (the Xbox 360 version) game. I think it would be a big job to go back and retrofit that game for split-screen. I just don't think we have the resources to do that unfortunately."

Rein did, however, reveal that Epic hopes to "make some improvements" with mod support on PS3 "some time down the road", although he didn't want to commit to specifics.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at the game's official unveiling in Las Vegas this week, Rein said that because Epic has spent more time on the 360 version compared with the PS3 version of the game it had benefited from more optimisation, and said that gamers "can draw your own conclusions from that".

It may have taken a little while longer than the rest of the pack, but Epic Games' other franchise is on its way to Xbox 360 soon. A release date hasn't yet been announced, but you can be sure that the extra time is going to good use. The Xbox 360 release will contain five new exclusive maps those other platforms didn't get, two new characters and will include two player splitscreen action. All that and it also sports all of the downloadable content that Epic has created for the PS3 and PC.

Epic boss Mark Rein has told videogaming247 that the company does know a release date for Unreal Tournament 3 on Xbox 360, but you're going to have to wait a little longer to get it.

"We do, but I don't think we put it out yet," said Rein when asked if the SKU had a release date. "It's kind of a when it's done thing. We have an idea of when it's coming. We have a big Midway Gamer's Day next week, in fact, in Las Vegas, where Midway's invited a whole bunch of people to come and play the game. I'm sure after that happens you'll see lots of impressions of the game."
One would think Microsoft would be more open to community content given the recent Xbox Live Community announcement, but Rein noted that the system is different. Rein said the Xbox 360 version has no set release date.

Conversely, Rein did acknowledge the current PS3 mod system is less than stellar and told Joystiq to expect improvements coming soon.

"We don't have a specific release date yet," the Epic VP told CVG, in response to magazine reports to the contrary. "Right now we're finishing up the European PS3 version."

"Seems that in the month of November, only 39,995 units of Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC were sold in the US. The expected number of units to be shifted was 70,000 so to only move half that number is not a good sign.
Crysis on the other hand, which was expected to move just over 68,000 units, ended up with over 86,000 units being shifted. Of course all of these numbers pale in comparison to the console sales, so hopefully with the release of UT3 on the PS3 a few days ago, and a 360 release sometime next year, the sales for UT3 will be a lot larger. Christmas could also help to push UT3 PC sales up."

"GPU physics could be achieved on a single graphics card, and would make a big difference to benchmarks. Even though talks between Havok and ATI have broken down since Intel bought the company, GPU physics were in development for quite some time before that, and it looks as though Unreal Tournament III could even support GPU physics with a future update.

An anonymous source who works in game development told Custom PC that 'the most interesting stuff we've done recently is with a "triple A" game, that's shipping now actually, which is physics-accelerated on GPUs, and in fact in the engine that the game is built upon.'

So which 'triple A' game would this be? 'I'm not allowed to name things at the moment,' said our source, 'which is why I'm being a little bit evasive, but both the engine and the game benefit from GPU acceleration in physics for the eye candy stuff, and it has a very significant benefit in benchmarks, but the developer hasn't yet made a public statement about that.' However, they did say that you could buy the game now."

The simExchange has released their monthly industry report.

Key Topics:
- Video games to break record sales
- PC Games continue to cannibalize each other
- Assassin's Creed - the woes of new intellectual property
- Rock Band - Too many hands in the cookie jar
- Wii - Can it handle M-rated titles

Analyst Jesse Divnich comments on sales:

"The prediction market expects November's software sales to be $1.15 billion which is a 42% increase over sales last year... [Software Sales] will be the highest ever seen in the month of November and the first time November sales will break $1 billion... Combining The NPD Group's estimates in October, retailers will net over $4.04 billion in software sales this holiday quarter, a 39% increase year-over-year-a record as well. "

CVG reports:

"A beta version of the UT3 patch is out, and it's awesome for at least two reasons. 1) It fixes lots of complaints we and other UT fans had about the awkward and over-restrictive menu and server browser, and b) it's backwards compatible.

That would be a total no-brainer in any other area of software design, but it's so rare in game patches that I'm actually going to have to explain what it means. It means you can still play with people who don't have the patch. That curious sound is the collective jaws of Valve, DICE and Blizzard hitting the floor."

All the technology behind the Unreal Engine 3, used in the PC version of the game, is said to be fully optimized for the PlayStation 3 system, which means that the game developers can take full advantage of its power and creativity. With mods and maps already available for the PC version of the game and with others announced, this feature is definitely not just dust in the wind. And it should allow the developers to start working on future releases, too.

The PlayStation 3 Version of Unreal Tournament 3 will be released to North American manufacturing and could show up in stores starting December 11th.The European release will occur later, though, because of some unfinished localization-related tasks. This means that early 2008 (January or February) is the best guess for European UT3 fans regarding the PlayStation 3 release.
Mark Rein has cleared up the current status of Unreal Tournament III on Xbox 360, which he was quoted as saying earlier this week hasn't even started production yet.

"What I probably should have said was 'start working on it again'," Rein told Joystiq. "We had the game up and running on all three platforms up until last spring. In fact Official Xbox Magazine came out and played the game for a great cover story they did on it.

Meanwhile, another site was reporting that they'd already played it on 360. Now, Rein has explained to Joystiq that it's not that work on the 360 version hasn't started yet, it's just that it's on hold.

"What I probably should have said was 'start working on it again.' We had the game up and running on all three platforms up until last spring. In fact Official Xbox Magazine came out and played the game for a great cover story they did on it. We stopped working on the 360 version so we could concentrate our efforts on shipping the various PC and PS3 versions. Once we get those out of the way, and take some time to enjoy the holidays with our friends and families, we'll start working on the 360 version again. There's still a decent bit of work to do. For example we have simple LAN play but no Xbox Live implementation yet and we need to work with Microsoft to figure out how to accommodate mods on their platform."
Epic hasn't even started on the 360 version of Unreal Tournament III yet, reveals company VP Mark Rein. He says Epic intends to finish the PS3 version before shifting focus to 360 "early next year", when we were originally expecting it to be released.

It seems Xbox 360 fans will have to wait a lot longer for their deathmatch action due to issues with running user-created mods on the platform.

In Rein's words: "The PS3 is an open system, and they embrace user-created content. But ...

The troublesome user interface featured in the Unreal Tournament III PC multiplayer demo has been a source of contention for many players of the game. In a recent post on the game's offical forums, Epic lead producer Jeff Morris has acknowledged the problem and says updates to the menu system are coming, just probably not before the title's PC release next week.

"We're aware that the UI isn't perfect," Morris wrote. "We're working on numerous improvements and additions to the user interface that will be made available in future updates to UT3."

Most have complained the system of menus lacks usability and resembles a UI designed for console titles. Regarding the upcoming PS3 version, Epic VP Mark Rein recently said it's possible the title could still be retailing this year.

Under the terms of the new agreement, GameSpy's multiplayer technology -- including multiplayer matchmaking, in-game and out-of-game messaging, player statistics, VoIP communication and a leaderboard and ranking system -- will be incorporated into both the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of Unreal Tournament 3.
When the hell is Unreal Tournament III coming out on PS3? No-one, not even Epic, seems to know, but a 2007 release isn't completely out of the question just yet, according to Vice President of Epic, Mark Rein.

UT III was originally scheduled to release in the latter end of this year before Midway said that there's every possibility it could be delayed into next year to ensure it's finished.

When a delay is suspected, you can usually be damn sure it'll happen, but Rein says it ...

PS3 UT3 has better graphics than Gears of War according to Mark Rein, Epic's vice president.

Speaking in an interview with Pro-G at the launch of the PC version of the game, Rein said that he was "really proud" of the PS3 game.

He said: "People are going to be pleasantly surprised. It's a really high end experience that pushes the graphics bar up even higher than Gears of War. There's more polygons, there's more stuff going on, there's more explosions and there's more things happening, so we're just really pleased with the way the game runs on the PS3."

Rein said that there is "something special" about playing UT3 on the PS3, and that while the speed of the game has been reduced by about 20%, "it feels just right to be playing it with a controller".
Zucker said the company has learned from the development process of Stranglehold and Unreal Tournament 3, and that the company's multiplatform releases would be more promptly synchronized going forward.

The Midway CEO concluded of the issues: "We do believe that these technical issues are now complete at a core level in our engine. Looking ahead to 2008, we expect the PS3 versions of our titles to ship day and date..." with the Xbox 360 and other SKUs.

Zucker hinted at an "ambitious open-world game" from Midway, to be announced shortly, and said to be one of the highlights of their upcoming slate. However, no other information was given.

Major publisher Midway Games has announced that, for the three-month period ending September 30, 2007, its sales totaled $36.7 million, up from $27.4 million last year. At the same time, however, the company reported losses of $33.5 million, increased from $22.5 million in 2006.

As for highlights, the company said that Xbox 360 and PC title Stranglehold has exceeded 1 million units shipped worldwide across all platforms, and the company anticipates shipping Stranglehold for the PS3 in Europe in the latter part of November.

Midway also highlighted its recent demo of Unreal Tournament 3 in conjunction with developer Epic Games, since a demo of Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC was recently released, and has remained one of the top 2 most downloaded games on FilePlanet.com since it was released on October 12th. However, the PS3 version of the title is still due in 2008, as confirmed earlier last month.
Inside an office in sunny Raleigh, North Carolina, Epic vice president Mark Rein settles back into a comfy seat. "It all started way back in the stone age," he begins. "You know, Tim Sweeney started the company in his parents' basement in Maryland." Today Epic is out of the basement and has the two monster-sized games Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War (PC) in development.

Outside of Mark's office, staff members play on the Epic basketball court, others help themselves to a ...

"We are going to release UT3 on Xbox 360 in 2008," confirmed Rein.

Regarding the game's performance, Rein explained, "I would think most of the people who read CVG would actually be able to get a great experience with Unreal Tournament III. We spent a considerable amount of time and effort making sure that gamers will be able to enjoy UTIII even with older gaming rigs," he added.

CVG reports: In the latest round of release date confusion surrounding Epic's Unreal Tournament III, Midway has said the PS3 version has now slipped to early 2008 - but the developer's informing a Christmas 2007 release could still happen.

Midway has announced a Q1 2008 release for UT III on PS3 in a financial report, but in response Epic's Mark Rein stated that as a public company the publisher felt an obligation to its shareholders to let them know about the possibility of a delay.

"Our goal is still to get the PS3 version of UT3 in stores before the end of 2007", Rein said in a post on Epic forums, but added, "However, we will only ship it once it's ready and is the best game we can deliver."
Rein went on to explain that UT III on PS3 will now feature the same map set as the PC version. Previously, the console version was to have fewer levels.

Speaking further, he said that PC UT III is "still on track for November", and that there'll be a demo released before the full game ships.

An Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament III is expected some time in 2008.

Based on the survey result, the report speculates that if the Xbox 360 version of UT3 had launched in November at the same time with its PS3 and PC versions, it might have been buried under an avalanche of Halo hype. But releasing it next year ensures that it will reach Halo 3 fans at a time when they might become more receptive. The report posits that the postponed release of the Xbox 360 version might have been a wise strategic move on the part of Midway President and CEO David Zucker.

Much ado has been made about the potential presence of cross-platform play in Epic Games' upcoming multiplayer-heavy shooter Unreal Tournament 3 (PC, PS3, X360). The most likely compatible platforms have been PC and PlayStation 3, as the Xbox 360 version has taken a development backseat and the PS3's approach to network architecture is more conducive to the kind of freedom Epic would want for such a service. PS3, unlike Xbox 360, also supports mouse and keyboard controls, which would allow for a more potentially level playing field between users of the two platforms.

Still, in an IRC chat conducted yesterday featuring numerous members of Epic's UT3 team, Epic VP Mark Rein finally confirmed that the game will not feature cross-platform multiplayer -- at least at launch.
BioShock, Mass Effect, Stranglehold... it seems everyone is using Epic's developer-adored Unreal Engine 3 - but how long before the Gears of War engine starts to look a bit dated?

Not any time soon, according to Gears overlord Cliff Bleszinski: "A lot of that comes down to the art department and what their style is, right?" The finely-groomed designer said.

"There's plenty of other ways that people can make an Unreal Engine 3 game look unique and cool. They're only limited by ...

CTF-FracturedWorlds
CTF-Icarus (been used before, but such a good fit)
CTF-Ionosphere
CTF-OmicronDawn
CTF-TaintedDawn

Finally they have chosen CTF-OmicronDawn, the name that were suggested by keyrat, who will be listed in the Unreal Tournament 3 credits.

The first three images below are from CTF-OmicronDawn, the fourth image is a concept art featuring DM-Sanctuary.
Unreal Tournament 3 was given a November 2007 release on PC and PS3 at this year's E3 but now Epic says that's not guaranteed.

Essentially, the developer won't ship the game until it's happy with it.

"We do not know exactly when the game will be completed. All we've said is that we're hoping for a November release but as you know we value getting it right over getting it right now so there's no guarantee of that," is the bombshell dropped by Epic's Mark Rein on the developer's ...
Unreal Tournament III looks just a little too good to be true, as these new screens yet again show.

But believe what you see, because even early preview versions we've seen (and previewed to death) looked stunning and ran smooth as you like. Yes, that includes the PS3 version, ...
Epic has a capture the flag map that needs a name, and thought they would turn to you for great ideas. They are starting with an open call for name suggestions. They are giving everyone until (9/10/07), then Epic will pick their favorite.

Here's some tips on how Epic chooses a name:
- It has to sound cool!
- The name must be of the form "CTF-Name". Multi-word names should be capitalized, i.e., "CTF-FirstSecondThirdWord"...

Epic Games' Mark Rein says we shouldn't expect an Unreal Tournament 3 demo for PS3 before the game's release in November, but a PC one will happen.

"We'll have a PC demo for UT, [but] I don't think we'll have a PS3 demo before the game ships," Rein told Eurogamer during Games Convention.

Rein likened the PS3 situation to the one that Epic faced with Gears of War prior to its release. "What we told Microsoft last year - they wanted a demo for Gears of War and we said 'you've got a choice - you can have the demo this year or the game this year'."

He continues to say that :

"The only way to silence the uninformed critics is to ship the games and let them play them for themselves. We're continually optimizing our engine on all supported platforms and we will continue to do so for several years into this generation. What we ship on PC and PS3 this fall will be considerably better than the builds we're showing here at Games Convention in every aspect."
Mark Rein Official Forum Response to Disk Sizes on PS3 & 360 (News)

Epic VP Mark Rein is feeling the true force of the fanboy and decided to post an official response to their statement about PS3 disks able to hold more data than that of the 360. His post begins as follows:

"I continue to be disappointed that folks on the internet treat any positive thing we say about one platform as some sort of critique of another platform. We're a multi-platform company folks please come to grips with that. We like the PC. We like the 360. We like the PS3. We like the Macintosh. We like Linux. We will deliver UT3 for all of these platforms and it will rock on every one.

The simple facts state that the optical disc on the PS3 holds more data than the optical disc on the 360. If we exceed size of the 360s optical disc then we'll have to find alternative ways to get the content to 360 users such as making it downloadable. Adding a second DVD to a game like UT3 would be a challenge because when playing online you might not know exactly what map you're going to be playing next and we have to be able to accommodate users of the core system. So does that mean the disc on the 360 might have a map or two less? Possibly although it is too early to tell for sure. People love Unreal Tournament because we always ship it with tons of great content but that also makes it a bit of a disc hog - in a good way

Obviously, and as is true with most major games on 360 and PS3, you're going to be putting your hard drive to good use if you want to experience the full richness of content that UT3 will have to offer over the lifetime of the game. the fact that you can do this is a good thing."

Speaking at this year's Edinburgh Interactive Festival, VP of Epic Games Mark Rein indicated that Unreal Tournament III for the Xbox 360 might have to get cut down in order to cope with the limitations of the console's hardware. Answering a question from the crowd about whether disc size would be a problem with an Xbox 360 port, he stated that "We'll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version...Blu-Ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom. And what's really cool is if you think forward and think about what we've done in the past with UT. We had UT 2003 and then we had UT 2004, which was everything in UT 2003 plus a whole bunch of great mod stuff that we went out and purchased from mod makers."

As with every single other anticipated game, Unreal Tournament 3 will have a Collector's Edition too, for the die hard fans looking for at bit more. The UT3 Collector's Edition will come in a special tin box (much like Gears of War), and include an art book, a bonus DVD with the usual behind the scenes/making of-content. Other than that, there's not much else in the box, besides one gorgeous multiplayer shooter.
