Produced by Atari in 1980, the first impression the arcade-goer had of Tempest was the game's housing - a triangular cabinet adorned with explosive interstellar artwork that screamed "Over here, look at me!" very, very loudly. The control panel, also covered in galactic art, contained a rotary spinner controller, a fire button, and the 'superzapper' button. This artistic extravagance has since made the Tempest cabinet a collector's dream, alongside the glow-in-the-dark Tron cabinet.

Tempest is the latest in a line of classic Atari coin-ops that suffer from the restrictions of the contemporary console controller. On the original arcade machine, this pseudo-3D shooter was controlled using two fire buttons and a rotating dial - a "spinner" to arcade fans - to move around the rim of the more-or-less tubular play field. It's a setup that a regular d-pad or analog stick just doesn't emulate well, and that basically makes what was already a difficult game a punishing experience ...

This week on Xbox Live Arcade, gamers will be treated to a double dose of fun as two new games hit the marketplace on Wednesday. The two titles include the classic arcade shooter Tempest and the 90's sports classic Sensible Soccer.

Sensible Soccer will cost gamers 800 points and Tempest will be priced with the bargain bin tag of 400 points.

Tempest developer Jeff Minter has shown off his new Xbox Live Arcade game, and as you'd expect from the man behind Neon (the Xbox 360's visualization software), it's looking rather trippy.

The game, which most people are calling "Space Giraffe" is a spiritual successor to Tempest, which has you shooting things in space with an erm, giraffe. Of course coming from the mind of the llama-obsessed Minter, the game features a bright and colourful art-style and epileptic seizures certainly don't look too far away.
