So what would happen if amoral Balkan sociopath Niko Bellic was in everyone's favourite cute and cuddly cartoon racer? Would Mario and chums accept him into the line-up with grace and humility? Would Niko keep the lid on all his murderous rage when Yoshi was firing red shells up his tailpipe? Of course, not. This is what would happen if the worlds of Liberty City and the Mushroom Kingdom clashed...

And that got us thinking. What ...

A fair bit of the latest Achievements added to Gears of War 2 are tied to the multiplayer ranking system. If you're an Achievement whore that lacks patience or mad chainsaw skills, this can be a bit of a bummer. But, then again, every holiday weekend seems to usher in a Gears 2 multiplayer XP event.

Well, what do you know? Epic Games is throwing a Labor Day event. Starting this morning and stretching through September 8th, everyone can earn double XP in multiplayer. In addition to this, winning teams in competitive public matches are being awarded with an extra 500 points. Also, Horde has been moved up to "Hardcore" difficulty, with "every tenth wave populated entirely by Sires."Sounds thrilling and it's totally happening right now! Go go go.
Like the double XP weekend they had not too long ago, you will receive double XP (obviously) as well as 500 additional XP points for a multiplayer win starting September 4th and running through September 8th. This time, however, Horde mode will default to Hardcore difficulty and every 10th round will be filled with Sires instead of masses of Tickers. If you are looking to finish off your multiplayer level-related achievements, this weekend will be a great time to do it.

During the Gearsiverse panel at Comic-Con, Epic's Cliff Bleszinski and Ron Fergusson revealed that there will be Gears of War-themed armor of both the COG and Locust variety coming to XBL Avatars soon. One rule that Microsoft imposes on Avatar clothing and models is that they "can't look inhuman," according to Bleszinski. So they pieced together a workaround set of Locust armor that you can check out beyond the break.

Look for these new Avatar upgrades to be available when the next Xbox Live dashboard update becomes available soon. Meanwhile, we're going to scurry out to our preview builds to see if they're already available

Heads up, COG soldiers. Epic's Gears of War 2 has just received its highly-anticipated fourth Title Update. The new update not only adds experience to Horde mode, but also fixes a variety of bugs, according to the update notes on the Gears forums. Aside from fixing some issues with the new cringe-inducing smoke grenades, the new update also tweaks the Wingman match type, doing away with some of the issues involving weapon spawning and a particularly nasty exploit where players could get credit for two kills while only killing one opponent.

Hopefully, this will fix some of the persistent issues plaguing Gears of War 2's online component. So, grease up your Lancer and head out into battle. This weekend is chock full of XP, after all!
Several users claimed after the Memorial Day weekend in which Epic Games ran the "Old School" event, Gears of War 2 started to experience issues with Matchmaking similar to those that affected the game right after launch. This time, it's not Epic Games' fault:"

The 72 x 160-foot LED wall at the center of the new Cowboys Stadium is certainly impressive enough when it's showing game highlights or concert footage, but no giant screen ever truly earns its credentials until it's been put to some real use: playing video games. Thankfully, Jonas Brothers video director Steve Fatone somehow pulled himself away from concert preparations to do just that earlier this week, and apparently became the first person to ever play Xbox 360 on the display in the process. As you can see above and in the gallery below, the two certainly seem to be made for each other, although it looks like the controller can get a tad touchy if you stray too far while trying to play it.

Xbox Live Gold members can now purchase the now 560 Microsoft Point map pack, a 240 Microsoft Point saving from its previous price tag of 800 Microsoft Points.

"With the recent trend of blockbuster games being packaged together (Game of the Year Bundle), it seemed that EPIC's blockbuster 'Gears of War' series was missing out on its very own package. What new plans does Microsoft have to revolutionize their ever improving console? Rumour has it Microsoft are delving deeper into the Wii side of things. Good decision or bad? You decide.

"Epic (Isn't) All About Pop-Tarts.

When Epic President Dr. Mike Capps took the podium for the first keynote address of the inaugural Triangle Game Conference, he began by warning the audience that the presentation would be rated "M." After all, Epic - from its humble beginnings as ten people across six countries creating Unreal - is known today partly for the ultra-violent Gears of War and Unreal series. More than that, though, there wouldn't be any prettying-up of the language, Capps said, apologizing in advance to the legal staff in the audience."

As you know, we are committed to keeping Xbox LIVE a safe and fair place to play for the more than 17 million active members. As part of our regular safety monitoring we have pinpointed a group of players who have unlocked specific Gears of War 2 Achievements through an unauthorized hack. Deliberate cheats like these are in direct violation of the Xbox LIVE Terms of Use and will not be tolerated. As I post this, we've begun taking steps to reset the Gamerscores of the offending players.

Split-screen.com: "Their showing at this year's Game Developers' Conference 2009 may not exactly reaffirm hopes but Microsoft has been very active as of late, albeit in secret. Besides rumours of new IPs from Rare doing the rounds, Microsoft Game Studios, the main in-charge of the Xbox and Games for Windows game division, has been doing the rounds on Gamasutra with about 18 job postings for various offers within the company. These rumours are pretty heavy but none more heavy than the fate of the 360's two biggest franchises and heavy hitters since the console's launch: Halo 3 and Gears of War. In fact, based on two of Microsoft Game Studios' listings, rumours suggest that Halo 3 may be coming to the PC this year and Gears of War could stay exclusive to Microsoft's platforms."
Please remeber it takes awhile for the update to propagate so it may take up to several hours after that time before it's available locally. Also, if you start getting matchmaking connection issues, it means others have the update and you don't, so please exit the game and fire it up again in order to download the update. Also please note that some of the new achievements require the next map pack "Snowblind" which will be released next week.
