Though our hobby is famous for igniting stupid flame wars and for inspiring stubborn fanboy bias, all gamers – no matter what their console or genre preference – can agree on, and rally around, one unassailable truth.

What makes a good video game? Strong visuals are important. Good controls are essential. A well-crafted concept helps too. These days, most games can boast at least two-thirds of that criteria.

So, then what makes a game great? Feeling. Emotion. Surprise. Interaction. Even addiction. It's a magical feeling when a game offers all these elements.

Here are the titles L.A. Times deemed the best experiences of 2007. Admittedly, they didn't play everything (because that would probably be impossible), but of the titles that did cross their paths, these are the ones that resonated most. Their favorites in order:

Best of the Year:
¿ BioShock
¿ Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
¿ Assassin's Creed
¿ Super Mario Galaxy
¿ The Orange Box

Honorable Mention:
¿ Halo 3
¿ Rock Band
¿ Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
¿ Cooking Mama: Cook Off
¿ Lost Planet

Worst of the Year:
¿ Lair

Dishonorable Mention:
¿ Fusion Frenzy 2
¿ 300: March to Glory
¿ Tenchu Z

The fictional future's always looked pretty dire, what with all the killer robots, invading aliens and - of course - World War III. But we'd gladly accept any of those dystopian fates over the one presented in party game sequel Fuzion Frenzy 2. At least they sound halfway interesting. This Xbox 360 exclusive, on the other hand, is a repetitive bore.

Dont get us wrong. We'd love to see a solid four-player party game on Microsoft's console, which offers plenty of over-the-headset Live action, ...
Every console needs a good party game. No matter how many gripping single player campaigns or furious deathmatch experiences a system offers, there will always be space for something that regular folks - regardless of their skills - can gather around and play immediately. On the Xbox systems, that space has always been somewhat of a vacuum. Theres been a Super Monkey Ball and a (shudder) Shrek Super Party, but nothing to rival the presence and popularity of Nintendos Mario Party or ...

Microsoft have released a list of games that will be featuring at this year's TGS. There are not many surprises, apart from the omission of the game everyone wants to see: Halo 3.

There are also a couple of games I have not heard of, such as Super Robot Taisen XO, so it will be interesting to see exactly what that turns out to be. Of course, it could be a Japanese title, since the event is in Japan, and might be an attempt to try and sell more 360s to the unwanting Japanese public. The games are as follows:

MotoGP'06 (THQ)
WWE 2007 SmackDown vs. Raw (THQ)
The Outfit (THQ)
Vampire Reign (AQ Interactive)
A Ressha de Gyouku HX (Artdink)
Dead Rising (Capcom)
Lost Planet Extreme Condition (Capcom)
Winning Eleven Serie (Konami)
Operation Darkness (Success)
Project Sylpheed (Square Enix)
Tomb Raider Legend (Eidos)
X-Men The Official Game (Spike)
Prey (Spike)
Full Auto (Sega)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega)
Chikyuu Boueigun X (D3)
Fuzion Frenzy 2 (Hudson)
Culdcept Saga (Bandai Namco)
Trusty Bell: Chopin's Dream (Bandai Namco)
Mobile Suit Gundam: Operation: Troy (Bandai Namco)
The Idol Master (Bandai Namco)
Super Robot Taisen XO (Banpresto)
Tenchu Senran (From Software)
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (Tecmo)
Forza Motorsport (Microsoft)
Viva Pinata (Rare)
Riot Act [Crackdown] (Microsoft)
Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis (Microsoft)
Gears of War (Microsoft)
