1942: Joint Strike - Xbox Live Arcade

Hands-on with 1942 and Commando

Two old-school challenges receive XBLA, PSN makeovers

The other half of Capcom's nostalgia bomb is Commando 3: Wolf of the Battlefield. The original game was an overhead, on-foot shooter that pitted one man against an army. Part three lets you choose from, appropriately, three characters named Wolf, Coyote and Fox, each with their own highly relevant backstory and personal quirks. We stormed through an early jungle level with all three mercs blasting everything in sight - in other words, just like the original with vastly improved graphics.

Littered throughout the various levels are vehicles made with co-op in mind. One drives while the other two shoot - picture a really scaled down Halo/Warthog experience and you'll get the idea. The rest is standard stuff, lots of weapons, lots of enemies, lots of mashing the shoot button. It is worth mentioning, however, that the difficulty will change based on how many players are alive at any time. So, if you go from three to one, there should be fewer baddies to take out. And, if you're a game music junkie like some of the GR staff, Metal Gear's Norihiko Hibino is handling the soundtrack.

Commando 3 hits this spring, offering online and same-system play for three misty eyed, hardcore gamers.
