Waggle-based football returns for another season, this time with the whole family in mind

Those of us who've been playing Madden for years tend to like things just so. We get comfortable with our button layouts, strategy selections, and kicking mechanics to the point of righteous indignance when any basic fundamentals change. Hell, we're still complaining about the infamous passing cone - and that was a couple of seasons back, for crying out loud. So it is with no slight apprehension that we approached Madden 08 on the Wii, for the concept of waggle-based football is enough to make our grumpy minds ache with fear.

The cause of most of our preliminary consternation is the new Family Play mechanic, of course. It's designed to make it easier for Granddad and little Jimmy to throw down gridiron-style, without junior trying to teach Pops the ins and outs of the complex Madden control scheme. Those of us who've been playing for years don't have these issues, of course, but newcomers are often befuddled by Madden's button mapping. So does the Family Play feature do what it's supposed to? No. And Yes. And Maybe.
