As you said, the feeling of being a superhero is just awesome, and wish fulfillment at its highest. I remember the first time I played the Arkham Asylum demo, the feelings of badassery I felt were amazing, you truly feel what it's like to be Batman, and get to see the terror he inflicts to his enemies. Just amazing.

It's definitely the feeling of empowerment for me as well. Playing as normal human characters can be fine - Drake from Uncharted, for example, is awesome - but I have the most fun in video games that put me in the shoes of someone who's superhuman. Being able to fly, or web-sling, or run up buildings then jump off and elbow drop a tank gives me a taste of doing something I could never do in real life, and it tastes so very good.

This was a very thought-out and well written article. Some of my reasons match your own, and some of those are reasons why I love playing as my favorite superheroes(Batman, Captain America) or experiencing a new hero rise(Cole, or my character from DCUO). I really can't get enough of them.

Prototype and Infamous are steps in the right direction, but I wish there was a game that let you create a new character and control everything about them. Make decisions, create a costume, interact with the environment and other characters Mass Effect style. Maybe randomly generate new characters to be villains and fellow heroes, who could become your arch enemy, or you could form leagues with them or reform villains or corrupt heroes by interacting with them. It would be amazing. Plus as you get more experience, your powers could evolve (this seems to be a running theme in comics lately) with new powers coming from a level up tree. Put enough into jumping and it becomes flight, agility becomes super speed, etc.

DC Universe OFFline with a touch of Spore and some rpg elements, perhaps? Sorry, couldn't resist the pun, but you do have a great idea there.

This can all be rounded quite neatly into "Because we're comic geeks".

All of these were great examples. Good job, GR.
