Video: A gentleman's guide to cricket

We show you the difference between a googly and a yorker in Ashes Cricket 2009

Words: on August 10, 2009

Ashes Cricket 2009 has hit the competition for six in the UK all-format sales chart to take the top spot. And while the England cricket team may be struggling at the moment, at least you can make sure they win by playing the game.

But do you know your cricket? Would you know a bodyline delivery if it smacked you in the face? (Hint – it probably would if you weren't paying attention). We've put together a short gentleman's guide to cricket which also contains images of us batting, bowling and rubbing our trousers with the Wiimote. Sorry about that last one.

Ashes Cricket 2009 is out now on Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in the UK and Australia.

The only cricket I know about is the one on my shoulder that tells me to huff Scotchguard and whistle at schoolboys.

Ahhh Cricket. The English addition to overly long, drawn out, boring bat and ball games.

Cricket is second only to foorball(actual football and not the imposter played in the US and practically nowhere else-btw how can they call it football when it's mainly about carrying the thing with your mits?)in the pantheon of the Worlds great sports.

FFS what other game can take five days, end without a winner and stops for not just lunch but tea and drinks as well? It's also one of the deepest, most strategic sports you could think of and just about the only one where the captain is of vital importance.

Sadly, and I've played the game on Wii and 360, the new game is absolute pants and we still haven't got a decent Cricket game/sim. I've just started teaching my wee lad to play as it goes and I enjoy nothing more than terrifying him by forcing him to do catching practise with a proper hard, seamed ball! I knock ut miles in the air and watch on evilly as his little face contorts with the fear and realisation of the fact it's going to sting if he catches it and knock him oput if he misses!

In some countries they'd say child abuse but here in Blighty it's just "life training"! Plus my dad did it to me, hit it higher than I do and it didn't hurt me. Much.

I still don't understand. But it makes me want to watch Peter Davison Dr Who, and reread the Hitchhiker's books again.
