Imagine if Nintendo had released "Popeye" instead of "Donkey Kong." The world would be monumentally different.

15 of 32 Story is spelled "sotry"

The king of the Water Land castle in Mario 3 looks like Mario.
  • shawksta - July 20, 2012 4:21 p.m.

Major Burrows was the directors voice? Thats Interesting, Kinda like how Sakurai himelf Voiced King Dedede in Brawl. A Chicken Power up? DAMN That Japanese cover of Super Mario 64 reminds me of the Mario,Bowser and Luii trophy on the 3DS's Street Pass, could it be a reference to the japanese cover? Really interesting stuff, although few were obvious

That was awesome! I learned a few new things about Mario with this list!

Donkey kong jr. became donkey kong. I think there are two different mario's. The first mario fought with original Donkey kong before going into mario bros. The second mario was the one who was born in mushroom kingdom and is the one who you play as in majority of super mario games. This might explain(realistically) why baby mario and mario are playable in the sport games at same time

so cranky kong was the original donkey kong that fought with Mario´s dad (known as jumpman) who had to rescue Pauline. eventually Pauline and Mario married and had twins and Donkey kong retired and focused on making inventions and potions. his son grew and became the Donkey kong of today. mario and luigi were born in the mushroom kingdom. does it make sense? that would explain mario's older looking appearance (were he was drawn bald) in the original donkey kong and why he used red overalls. he probably gave baby mario his hat and made a green one for luigi. maybe I´m over thinking but it makes sense if you think about it.

You guys should really cut out this multipage thing... is it impossible for you to maybe put like.. 10 per page or some crap?

I agree, I'd really like an option to choose between Article View and slideshow view. Is there already an option I'm not seeing?

They could do that but it would cut their ad revenue by a third.

Luigi doing the ASL sign for "lesbian" in front of both princesses. Solid effing gold right there. One of the biggest benefits of Luigi not being in the spotlight is that they can get away with making him do strange and less than child-friendly stuff like this with most people being none the wiser.
  • shawksta - July 20, 2012 7 p.m.

Depsite Mario's Popularity, Luigi's got the personality and traits, and it really benefits him both physically, Referencingly and ESPECIALLY in RPG Mario games where he really shines, especially Super Paper Mario

this is one of the best articles I've ever read on here. thank you.
  • ObliqueZombie - July 20, 2012 6:09 p.m.

You know, I've always wondered where the hell that "It's on like Donkey Kong" came from. I'm glad to know it was the most annoying voice-over in Black Ops.
  • ObliqueZombie - July 20, 2012 6:16 p.m.

Also, can you imagine a slew of Popeeye games, and not Mario? The world would be much, much bleaker.
  • fattoler - July 21, 2012 11:57 a.m.

You misspelled 'better'. I mean if they were as good as the Mario games that is...
  • ObliqueZombie - July 25, 2012 7:33 p.m.

    Super Popeye Galaxy. Enough said.
  • LordZarlon - July 20, 2012 7:45 p.m.

Excellent work Henry! I really enjoyed this article. It was fun to read and showed us that, if we bothered to read manuals and pre-release info, we might actually know more about our favorite games than we do.
  • J-Fid - July 20, 2012 8:20 p.m.

I knew 13 of those, but the rest totally came as a surprise. Guess I need to waste more time doing more research.

It's King Bowser Koopa and Princess Peach Toadstool. Bowser and Peach are first names, Koopa and Toadstool are last names. The intro to Mario 64 proves this. Her letter is from Princess Toadstool and she signs it Peach.
