The X-Files
“Gethsemane”
A different kind of cliffhanger here, as it's not all bells and whistles. In fact, it's downright subdued, but no less memorable (or chilling) because of that. Throughout the episode Mulder has become more and more despondent, after he's told that he’s been a prime target of a Government conspiracy which makes him doubt everything he believes in (except perhaps his porn collection). The episode ends with Scully mournfully announcing, “Agent Mulder died last night from an apparent gunshot wound to the head." The fact that we don’t actually see this somehow makes the revelation all the more shockingly believable.
