The Last of Us review

I don't like how some people give Dave crap for his glowing 10/10 review for Bulletstorm. I think he was absolutely correct about almost all the things he had to say about the game. The way I see it, Dave is willing to see a game and value it for what it is. Bulletstorm was a cerebral and engaging game in its own right, a ballet of ultraviolence at the mercy of the player's fluid mechanical beckoning, dressed in the masterful guise of a silly big dumb action shooter game. In this respect, Bulletstorm actually did more for violence in action videogames than a lot of your typical face-shooters that came before it did. Here, it seems, The Last of Us expands upon the presentation and treatment of violence and action in video games. The thing that I really like about Dave is that he's willing to see how things fit into the big picture, into the grand scheme of things, and how much he loves witnessing and experiencing the advancement of our favorite entertainment medium really shines through in almost everything he writes. Exceptional review, Dave. High time I dusted off my PS3.

Bulletstorm sits right between Bioshock 2 and Red Dead on the "favorites" deck of my games bookshelf. The negative comments always perplexed the hell out of me. People will play the same goddamn game in its 5-6 iteration (AC,Gears,COD,Halo) but when something comes along and reinvents the genre it tanks. I don't think gamers understand satire, which would explain House of the Dead:Overkill's colossal failure....

I've had it preordered for a while now, although i'm still in 2 minds whether it's actually my kind of game. The Uncharted series is great so I have complete faith in ND, but i'm not really a fan of the survival horror genre. However I did enjoy most aspects/ playing through 'I Am Alive' recently, and the general consensus from most people was that it was poor to mediocre at best (at least critically, anyway; I gave it a 7). But when you read hyperbole like "It's a bona fide, genre-defining, once-or-twice-a-generation Big Deal; the game is a thrilling, emotionally pounding and intellectually nourishing experience. In terms of everything the modern action game has strived to be, The Last of Us is the full-stop at the end of the sentence, leaving no more to be said. Until next-gen. If this is our starting point for that, then the next five to ten years could be truly amazing." its hard not to be hyped.

To be fair, yeah, the huge amount of helicopter crashes (every five minutes by my timing) does rather jar with the gritty, post-apocalyptic vibe. I mean how are they even maintaining those helicopters in a resource-strapped, technologically regressed dystopia?* *There are not really any helicopter crashes. Also yeah, welcome back.

Hey it's the Internet's easiest to spot troll! welcome back you cheeky guy you!
  • Pooka - June 6, 2013 4:52 p.m.

If everyone knows he's just trying to troll, is he a troll anymore? Doesn't that just make him a really sad, pathetic individual that is screaming for internet attention? I liken it to acting like a retard in public to get sympathy from people who don't know better :( Makes me a sad panda

Y'know, I was once of the same opinion. But then i just learned to stop caring and love him. Now I just see his presence as comforting and cute. He's a fluffy little guy.

Every once in a while he has coherent posts and every single time he does that it's always like that scene in The Usual Suspects.

I'll be honest. I was getting worried. For a second there I was chalking up your absence to the fact you may have actually been Steve Jobs!

I had a lot of faith in this game so I pre-ordered asap. Glad to hear I didn't waste my money. Definitely top on my list for games this year(besides Bioshock), I mean GTA V looks awesome too but it just don't top my excitement for this game.
