Sonic Adventure, the only good 3D Sonic game, hits XBLA on September 15

Do you smell that? Ah, yes, it's the unmistakable aroma of a failed console desperately trying to be loved again on a successful console. The first downloadable Dreamcast game will be making its way to the Xbox 360 in just a couple weeks.

Sonic Adventure, known to many fans as the last Sonic game worth caring about, will be sliding onto Xbox Live Arcade on September 15 for the affordable price of $10.

Sega announced earlier this year it would be bringing Dreamcast games to the Xbox 360 and PS3. While only a handful of actual worthwhile titles in the Dreamcast's discarded history actually come to mind, it's still cool to see the "Virtual Console" atmosphere that was first kicked off by the Wii continue to fill up.

Although Sonic Adventure had its fair share of bugs, I'll debate anyone anytime, anywhere that Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Heroes and Sonic Unleashed were pitiful by comparison. But then again, I just liked the fact that I could play as Eggman and repeatedly throw my little Chao pets into a wall of rocks.

Above: Unfortunately, even in high definition, you still have to wade through Big the Cat's boring fishing missions

No word yet on when Sonic Adventure will be coming to PS3, but hopefully there won't be a significant time gap. After all, PS3 owners still don't have a downloadable version of classic Sonic 2 even though it's been on the 360 and Wii for years now.

The only other Dreamcast title officially confirmed for a download release is Crazy Taxi, though Jet Set Radio appears to be in the bucket list too. But as far as we're concerned, Sega's job here will not be complete until the Japanese Dreamcast bus simulation game Tokyo Bus Guide has been ported to all of the current-gen consoles. But we'll take Sonic Adventure for now.

I actually think Sonic Adventure 2 was better. Oh, and first.

    @ThatGuy: Incorrect.

I had more fun with 2 myself, but both of them are fine games. I can't wait until they get the idea of porting ChuChu Rocket and Powerstone's 1 and 2 to the service.

Sonic Adventure 2 had a few levels that were more fun, but it made up for that with the awful Knuckles/Rouge missions.

Whoa, Sonic Adventure is a steal and a half for $10. Is this going to be the DX version?
  • NeoKef - August 31, 2010 11:30 p.m.

I want to know if the Chao Garden will have online for it or not.

If I could only take one or the other, I'd take Werehog stages over Big the Cat stages any day. But in both "Adventure" and "Unleashed", the pure Sonic levels are where the respective games really shine.

Or better yet, transferring a Chao to a portable device.

That's cool that Dreamcast games are coming to XBLA and Playstation Store. I might just get this game.

$10? Wow, I'll buy that for sure! I thought it would be at least $15. And as someone already said, Adventure 2 is better.

  • shadowarrior99 - September 1, 2010 3:24 a.m.

Too bad ill be mainly playing Halo: Reach. But ten dollars? That's amazing! If it was thirty or more i wouldnt have, i bought it at a high price for dreamcast and the gamecube. Hopefully theres some live compatibility, (i cant remember if there is multiplayer or not). Anyone know if its the DX Cut or any new aditions? I played this game a lot when i was a kid, but its hard to pick favorites on adventure 2 or one. I love running down the tower on that one level, it had great music too. A very memorable moment.

I actually thought Heroes was better than the first Sonic Adventure. It was really fun. Also Big and Amy's levels were fucking unbearable.
