RadarPlays - F-Zero

Thanks to a Wii U update last week, the Virtual Console is now available on the platform, starting with a handful of SNES and NES games. To welcome the new feature, this RadarPlays has us jumping into one of the first SNES games, F-Zero. We took a few laps in the 16-bit racer, so how does the breakneck speed feel on Nintendo’s newest console? Editors Henry, Ryan, and Lucas find out below…

Want to hang out with GamesRadar's editors while taking a look at retro games, new releases, and totally random experiences? RadarPlays is for you. Mondays we'll be checking out blasts from the past on RadarPlays Retro, Wednesdays we change things up to whatever we feel like playing with RadarPlays Shuffle, and Friday is packed with the strangest titles you’ve never (hopefully) heard of in RadarPlays Freaky. We'll also release RadarPlays for all the new releases, so be sure to check back!

F-Zero and Super Mario World were my first experiences of the SNES. A friend picked up one around launch in the UK and while Mario was the superior game, F-ZERO made the far greater and lasting impression on me. I had never seen anything quite like it on a home system before. Apart from a couple of weeks later when a plane flew out of the screen (blowing my mind as well as Neo City) on the first level of Contra 3, I don't think any other game made a bigger first impression in the 16-bit era.

The best 30 cents I ever spent were on this game. Really want a WiiU version, even if it is impossible to win. Btw, Captain Falcon is from Port Town, not Mute City. SSBM probably only skewed that fact by letting you fight on Mute City. You guys had to give Ryan the controller on the toughest level of the course. I knew it wasn't going to end well...
